How we picked theseThe 407 Visa is a temporary visa for those who wish to undertake occupational training in Australia so long as that occupation is on the eligible skilled occupations list. It is designed to help improve your skills for your job or area of study and enhance your field of expertise.
While you need to have an approved sponsor, there are 3 types of occupational training covered by this visa. These include:
You must have worked or studied full time for at least 12 months in the nominated occupation and it must be on the 407 Training Visa Occupations List. The company that sponsor you must also be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor and provide a full structured training plan in the application.
The minimum age requirement is 18 and you may need to meet certain English proficiency requirements unless you are a native speaker.
The 407 also comes with an 8501 requirement which means you need health cover equivalent to or better than Australia's public health care system, Medicare.
You can't work less than 30 hours a week and can only work for your sponsor and in the nominated field. If you leave your job, your visa will no longer be valid. This visa can't be extended for any longer than two years either.
While all Australians have access to Medicare, most have private health insurance as well. That's because Medicare only covers some hospital expenses but not fully, while it doesn't cover most out of hospital expenses like dental. These services are sometimes known as extras or ancillary services.
If you are from countries such as the U.K or Ireland, you will have access to Medicare through Australia's Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (RHCA) which helps cover emergency medical costs. Because you are entitled to the same services as Medicare users, having this satisfies the 8501 health requirements. However, you won't be covered for extras services or private hospital treatment and will have out of pocket expenses whenever you need to go to the doctors.
For those who are not eligible, or looking for a private level of cover simply want better health cover, you should get Overseas visitors health cover (OVHC). There are a lot of comprehensive policies available to choose from. If you do opt for a basic policy, make sure it still meets the minimum health requirements or your visa won't be granted.
Pricing is based on a single individual living in the State of New South Wales on a visa and is not from a country that Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with and is not eligible for cover under Medicare. Prices are accurate for 2025 but are subject to change.
