The best supermarket saving strategy | Savings with Sarah #2

This week I spoke to Mary Madigan at news.com.au about saving money at the grocery store.

She wanted to know: is there much to be gained in comparing and shopping around between the different supermarkets?

Which supermarket gives you the best bang for your buck? Find out.

Short answer is: yes! Spending a little extra time shopping around can absolutely save you money, but the key is to be strategic so it's convenient and you're not spending more money on transport between the different shops than you're gaining.

The best place to start in my opinion is cleaning basics like laundry detergent, toilet paper and dishwasher tablets. At a discount department store like Big W, 6L of laundry liquid is around $22.

Sometimes you can get it on sale for even less. You can pay up to $26 for 2L of laundry liquid at Woolies, so by shopping around, you're getting 3 times the volume for less money.

Stock up on these bulk items once every couple of months at a discount department store, and you'll notice a big difference to your grocery budget.
