Our verdict
You can earn 2% cashback on tap and pay purchases and hold 10 different currencies with this everyday transaction account.
Arguably the biggest benefit of this account compared to other transaction accounts is that you can earn 2% cashback on tap and pay purchases under $100. This is capped at $50 per month, which allows you to earn up to $600 over the year just in cashback. To be eligible for the cashback benefit you need to deposit $2000 a month, which could be easy to do if you get your salary deposited into the account.
This account won Best Travel Debit Card at the 2024 Finder Awards. It was highly commended in the Best Transaction Account category.
As well as the cashback perk, you can hold up to 10 different currencies in the account at once which allows you to pay like a local when you’re overseas. There are no international transaction fees which can also save you a lot of money when traveling, as these can be as high as 3.5% of the transaction value with other accounts.
Even if you don’t travel much, you can still save money from paying no international transaction fees when shopping online from international retailers.

Hi Nicholas, HSBC lists a passport or drivers licence as required ID for this account – if you can’t supply either of those applying online is going to be tricky. You can confirm if other forms of ID will be accepted with HSBC, you can contact the bank on 1300 131 605. Hope this helps!

I would like to open an account for visa debit card but I don’t want to put my salary in each week. I would just like to transfer money on weekly basis but that is not an option when asked that in application.

Hi Mandy, your best bet is to check with HSBC directly on this. You can reach them on 1300 308 008.
Best of luck!

Re: “If I make a purchase online overseas but from Australia, eg pay for accomodation in Italy for a holiday …”
Will the payment be taken from my EGA AUD account or the Euro account if there is enough in there?

Funds in the Euro account will be used first. If those aren’t sufficient to cover the transaction, the rest of the payment will be made in AUD, converted at the current Visa exchange rate. Hope this helps!

Can I deposit business income into this account?

Hi Susan,
This account is available to personal customers only. If you have a business registered in your own personal name as a sole trader, you might be able to use this account to receive business income, but you can’t open this account in a pty ltd business name.
Hope this helps!

Hi. If I make a purchase online overseas but from Australia, eg pay for accomodation in Italy for a holiday in a few weeks, is there a foreign currency conversion fee ?

That’s right, there will be no international transaction fee charged. The money will be converted from your AUD balance at the current Visa exchange rate on that day.
