What is 4G home internet?

4G home internet, also known as home wireless broadband, connects you to the internet using the mobile network, just like your phone does.

Instead of a fixed-line connection, it runs through a modem that stays in one place, making it a great option for home use but not something you can take on the go.

Is 4G home internet available to everyone?

Not always. It depends on factors such as network coverage, tower congestion and provider restrictions.

The easiest way to check is to head to the provider's website, enter your address, and see if you're eligible.

How many providers offer 4G home internet plans?

There are seven providers in our database offering 4G home internet plans. These include:

There are fewer 4G home internet providers, likely because the speeds are better suited for smaller households or lighter use, which makes up a smaller portion of internet users.

Is 4G home internet fast enough?

Before we dive into speeds, it's worth noting that all the 4G home internet plans in our table offer unlimited data, so you don't need to worry about tracking your usage.

Now, onto the speeds, which can vary between plans and providers.

  • 4G home internet plans are frequently capped to a maximum download speed of 20-25Mbps.

  • Typical evening download speeds (7-11pm) when most people are online range from 16 to 25Mbps.

  • This speed is great for browsing, emails, social media, and streaming music, as well as SD and HD video. However, it's not suitable for 4K streaming and potentially online gaming.

  • At this speed, 1-3 people could be online at the same time, but you may notice a lag if all 3 of you are medium-to-heavy internet users and logged in simultaneously.

  • Upload speeds usually range from 1-2Mbps. Optus is an exception, offering maximum upload speeds of 8Mbps.

ProviderFastest typical evening download speeds available
iiNet16Mbps
Kogan Internet16Mbps
Optus16Mbps
Southern PhoneTypical evening speed unavailable; maximum speed is 20Mbps
SpinTel25Mbps
TPG16Mbps
Yomojo16Mbps

If you're looking for faster speeds, a 5G home internet plan could be a better choice, as you can get typical evening speeds of up to 300Mbps.

What is the best 4G home internet plan?

Since all 4G home internet plans offer unlimited data, the best plan will mostly come down to price and speed.

Some of our top picks include SpinTel, iiNet and TPG for the reasons we describe below.

SpinTel

SpinTel's 4G home internet plan is a great pick for the maximum speeds you can get on this internet connection, based on the plans in our database. This is true even during peak hours (7–11pm) when most people are online.

The ongoing monthly price is just under $50, but there's a one-off $20 delivery fee for the modem plus a $4 monthly rental fee. There's no lock-in contract, so you can leave anytime.

TPG and iiNet

If you're not after the fastest speeds and prefer a plan with a modem included, iiNet and TPG are solid options at just under $55 a month. You can get a refurbished modem for free - just return it when you cancel.

They also frequently offer 6-month discounts, which can help you save some money.

Is 4G home internet better than NBN?

It depends on how you use the internet and the type of NBN connection you have.

Generally, a fixed-line NBN connection offers more stability than 4G home internet.

Several factors can affect the quality of your 4G home internet connection, including the strength of your mobile signal, your proximity to a mobile tower, network congestion, the location of your modem and weather conditions.

The pros and cons of 4G home internet compared to NBN include:

Pros
  • 4G home internet is easy to set up
  • It's generally cheaper than comparable NBN plans (NBN 12 and NBN 25)
  • The 4G network is accessible to the majority of the population
Cons
  • 4G home internet speeds are capped at up to 25Mbps, while NBN offers multiple speed tiers
  • It's a less stable connection than fixed-line NBN
  • You can't BYO modem

If you're still unsure about signing up for a 4G home internet plan, you can compare other NBN alternatives instead.

In a Finder survey of 1,006 Australians, the majority of respondents (566) indicated that the primary reason for buying a home wireless broadband plan was to save on their home internet costs.

Other plan details include:

  • No lock-in contract
  • No start-up or delivery fees

Other plan details include:

  • No lock-in contract

  • $0 modem if you stay connected for 24 months. If you cancel before then, you'll pay the remaining cost in full ($9 x months left)
  • Access to Optus SubHub, where you can save 10% by bundling subscriptions

Telstra 4G home internet

Telstra doesn't offer 4G home internet. Instead, it only has a 5G home internet plan, which you can sign up for if your home is covered by 5G.

You can check if you're eligible by entering your address on its website.

If 5G isn't an option, your second option is to sign up for one of its mobile broadband plans.

You can check out its mobile broadband and 5G home internet plans in our review of all things Telstra internet.

How do you install 4G home internet?

You don't need to worry about installation, as you'll get a modem that's ready to plug in and use.

That said, you'll need to use the provider's modem since bringing your own isn't an option. Modem costs vary, so it's worth checking each provider's terms.

Some include it for free if you stay connected for a certain period or return it when you cancel. Others might let you rent it month-to-month for a small fee.
