From great to greater: The transition from 720S to 750S

The McLaren 750S made its grand Australian debut this week in Sydney, fresh off its international launch in Portugal.

Envisioned as the successor to the formidable 720S, the 750S is a tour de force in the supercar segment, setting new benchmarks for performance and design.

"Drivers have long revered McLaren as the epitome of driving performance – and the reputation of 720S meant that 750S needed scrupulous consideration to create a supercar that enhanced its predecessor," said Paul Harris, McLaren Automotive's APAC and China managing director.

Priced from $585,800 AUD plus on-road costs for the coupe and $654,600 AUD for the Spider, the McLaren 750S sits in the market like a bespoke tailored suit among off-the-rack outfits: eye-wateringly expensive for many, but in the realm of supercars, it's competitively priced.

Its debut at Bangarra Wharf, under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, didn't just signal the launch of a new car; it marked the dawn of a new supercar era. The 750S is more than the successor to the 720S. It's a bold testament to McLaren's pursuit of excellence, setting a new gold standard in the supercar world.

Specs on the McLaren 750S

The McLaren 750S establishes new performance paradigms. Here are just a few of the highlights:

• 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 2.8 seconds
• 0-200 km/h sprint in a blistering 7.2 seconds (7.3 seconds for the Spider variant) – not that you've ever get a legal chance to test this out….
• Segment-leading power-to-weight ratio of 432kW per tonne
• A featherlight minimum dry weight of 1277kg, making it 30kg lighter than the 720S and 193kg lighter than its closest competitor, the Ferrari 296 GTB.

At the heart of this beast, a 552kW, 800Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission, crowning the 750S as the most potent and lightest series-production McLaren to date​.

McLaren 750S design and comfort

The 750S introduces an all-new interior, featuring carbon fibre-shelled racing seats and the lightest standard wheels ever equipped by McLaren.

These changes not only enhance the vehicle's overall aesthetic appeal, but also contribute significantly to its overall performance and handling prowess​.

To put it into perspective, McLaren have even managed to shed weight from the instrument cluster, with 1.8kg removed as the team searched for ways to lighten the vehicle.

Further improvements include a 6mm wider track at the front. It doesn't sound like much, but with the new suspension geometry, it promises more front-end grip, which is something you can't have enough of with 740 horses (552kW) kicking you along.

"For 60 years, our past has fuelled our future," Harris said. "Every small change yields significant results."

The 750S, born from this ethos, carries McLaren's rich legacy into a new era, improving every aspect that matters to a driver. The result is a lighter, dynamically superior supercar that provides an immersive and exhilarating driving experience.
