$25 from Coles gift card hack: What’s the catch?
This Flybuys hack can give you some extra dollars off - or a boost in Velocity Points.
From today until 23 February 2023, Coles is offering 2,000 bonus Flybuys points when you buy a $100 or $250 Coles Mastercard Gift Card.
You can use that card for anything you're planning to buy, so you're not grabbing a gift card purely for the Flybuys.
But there is a catch: there's a $5 service fee for the $100 card and a $7 charge for the $250.
So let's do the maths. 2,000 Flybuys points gets either you $10 off a future shop or can be converted to 1,000 Velocity Points.
So if you buy one of the $100 cards and take the $10 off option, you're essentially getting $5 for free after paying the service fee.
If you maxed out by buying 5 $100 cards (the most this promotion allows), you'd effectively be getting $25 for free via Flybuys.
Note that there's notably less value in buying the $250 card, since the $7 service fee is higher but you don't earn any more points for doing so.
Personally, I favour converting my Flybuys into Velocity Points. Spending those on flights will get me more value, even after I take the $5 off.
Either way, this is a potentially useful hack for getting some extra cash or points.
Often, the biggest challenge will be finding a Coles branch with the cards in stock. (You have to buy them in store.)
If you miss out, though, chances are this will happen again. Coles ran this deal 7 times last year, according to my records.
Remember to actually spend your cards too - the average Australian has $198 in unused gift cards, Finder research shows.
