Our verdict

Offers $125 back to your new card and a $0 annual fee in the first year.

The ANZ First’s simplicity makes it a contender for people new to credit cards or anyone looking for a card without bells and whistles. The $125 back and the $0 first-year annual fee can also add value when you first get the card, with a relatively low spending requirement for the cashback offer. The $30 annual fee that applies from the second year is on par with other low fee cards. But it’s worth noting that the ANZ First has a variable purchase rate of 20.99% p.a., which is at the higher end of the scale.

Pros

  • $125 credit back on your new card
  • $0 annual fee in the first year
  • Low minimum credit limit of $1,000

Cons

  • High 20.99% p.a. interest rate for purchases

Hi Waleed,

The ANZ First is a credit card, so you can use it for purchases and then need to repay what you spend. If you don’t repay the total amount by the due date on your statement, you’ll be charged interest. As a credit card, it’s not meant for depositing funds or receiving payments from other people in the same way as a bank account. Finder’s guide to credit cards for beginners has more details on how these accounts work. I hope this helps.

I am retired and still have a credit card attached to my husband’s credit card. He nearly died last year so I decided to apply for my own credit card. Denied.

Had difficulty providing documents. No pay slip, no tax assessment. I have a fortnightly income stream from a trust which goes into same bank. Not proof of income apparently.

Never had credit card problems in past.

Own a house. No loans or debt

Why can’t retired women get a credit card?

Hi Sue,

That sounds very difficult. Every bank and credit card company is different in how it considers income streams. Finder has a guide about credit cards for people who are retired and also one on low income credit card options that may be of assistance. But any application will be subject to lending criteria and assessment by the issuer. Contacting them directly before applying may also give you more context.

What fees do I incur for using my credit card while on holiday in spain

Hi Decy,

Thanks for leaving a question. For ANZ First Visa Card. The following fees will be incurred if you use the card while in Spain:

Overseas ATM Withdrawal Fee $5

Overseas Cash Advance Fee 2% or $4, whichever is greater

Foreign Currency Conversion Fee (Visa/Mastercard) 3% of transaction value – this is charged when you make a transaction that is converted by a credit card network, such as Mastercard, Visa or American Express, from Australian dollars to a foreign currency.

For other fees, you can check the Fees tab on this same page.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Joyce

What is the minimum monthly repayment?

Avatar

Charisse Finder

Hi Qeu,

Thanks for reaching out to Finder.

The Minimum Monthly Payment ANZ requires from you is generally 2% of the relevant closing balance (subject to a minimum of $25). The monthly statement of account that ANZ sends you will show you how much your closing balance is and how much you need to pay as the minimum.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Charisse
