As an everyday expense, you can earn points per $1 on petrol when you pay with a rewards credit card. Most of these cards also give you a way to save on fuel spending, thanks to rewards including gift cards and cashback. So, let's take a look at your options.
Credit cards that offer rewards points
for spending on petrol
What credit cards offer more rewards for petrol and fuel spending?
Most rewards credit cards earn points per $1 on your everyday spending, including petrol. But some credit cards offer a higher amount of points per $1 on petrol spending. For example, the American Express Platinum Edge offers 3 points per $1 at major petrol stations and supermarkets, compared to 1 point per $1 on most other spending in Australia.
There are also credit cards linked to rewards programs that already offer petrol benefits. For example, Coles Mastercard credit cards give you a way to earn and redeem points at Coles Express service stations.
Pros and cons of petrol credit card offers
Pros
- Earn points per $1 on fuel. A credit card that offers more points on fuel spending can help fast-track your rewards.
- Fuel rewards. You can usually redeem points for cashback, fuel gift cards or even when you're paying for petrol at a service station.
- Extra perks. These credit cards often come with perks like complimentary insurance, concierge services and airport lounge passes.
Cons
- Annual fees. Most of these credit cards have an annual fee, which typically ranges from $58 to $700 or more.
- High interest rates. Rewards credit cards typically have higher interest rates than most other cards. Unless you pay your balance in full and get interest-free days, interest charges could quickly add up.
- Service station restrictions. If you get a credit card that's only partnered with select service stations, you'll need to make sure you only get petrol with that particular brand to make the most of it.

A handful of rewards programs in Australia have direct partnerships with service stations. This gives you a way to get value from your petrol spending without a credit card – or earn even more points with one.

Example: How much value can I get from paying for petrol with a credit card?
To give you an idea of how much value you can get with a card that has a higher earn rate for petrol spending, let's take a look at the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard.
It earns an equivalent to 0.5 Flybuys points per $1 on all your eligible spending, including petrol. In this scenario, we'll assume you can get all your petrol at a Shell Coles Express service station, which also offers 1 Flybuys point per $2 spent.
Weekly petrol spend | Points per year | Petrol rewards example |
---|---|---|
$100 |
| $20 off your spending at Shell Coles Express service stations (or for spending at other Flybuys partner stores) |
$200 |
| $50 off your spending at Shell Coles Express service stations (or for spending at other Flybuys partner stores) |
$300 |
| $70 off your spending at Shell Coles Express service stations (or for spending at other Flybuys partner stores) |
In this example, you could save between $20 and $70 off your petrol in a year just by paying for petrol with the Coles No Annual Fee credit card and scanning your Flybuys card.
If you earned Flybuys points with other partners, or through bonus points offers, you could get even more money off your petrol and other spending.
With data from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) showing that petrol prices reached an 8-year high in February 2022 and have risen since then, rewards are one way you could save on costs – or at least get more value out of what you spend.

Hi John,
Thanks for your question.
Apologies, I have no idea. I did a bit of research on Google and ‘One Big Switch’ came up, could that be the campaign you’re talking about?
Cheers,
Shirley
hi, im wanting a fuel credit card that shows the litres, that also gives me points ?
thanks Michelle
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for your comment.
To our knowledge there aren’t any cards that actually show you how many litres you can get. How they work is that you earn points and redeem them for discounts off certain petrol purchases, or you earn more points for shopping at petrol stations.
Cheers,
Shirley
I purchase fuel at BP, which rewards card best helps me to earn points on my purchases.

what is the best direct fuel card currently on offer????
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your question.
The ‘best’ direct fuel card will depend on your unique financial situation and how you intend to use the card.
With your individual financial needs in mind, you may wish to look over our petrol credit cards and visit the credit cards with bonus points for supermarket and petrol purchases to compare your options. Before applying, please ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria and read through the details of the needed requirements as well as the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions when comparing your options before making a decision on whether it is right for you.
I hope this has helped.
Thanks,
Sally
