Types of credit cards from St.George

  • St.George balance transfer credit cards

If you have an existing credit card debt with a bank other than St.George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne, choosing a St.George credit card with an introductory low or 0% balance transfer rate can help you save on interest and pay off the debt faster.

At the end of the introductory period, any debt remaining from the transfer will attract the card's variable cash advance rate. As this rate can be high, you'll get the most value from a balance transfer offer if you can pay it off during the introductory period.

  • St.George rewards credit cards

St.George Amplify Rewards credit cards earn points per $1 on your eligible spending – which covers most everyday purchases. You can redeem your points for rewards including gift cards, retail items and travel through the Amplify Rewards program. Or, transfer your points to Velocity Frequent Flyer with a minimum transfer of 3,000 Amplify points giving you 1,500 frequent flyer points.

  • St.George frequent flyer credit cards

St.George offers two Qantas credit cards: the Amplify Platinum Qantas Card and the Amplify Signature Qantas Card. With one of these cards, you'll need to include your Qantas Frequent Flyer details when you apply. If you already have an Amplify credit card, you can switch to Amplify Qantas by calling the Amplify Rewards centre on 1300 489 586.

  • St.George low rate credit cards

The St.George Vertigo credit card offers a low interest rate on purchases and competitive annual fee. This card can help you save on interest charges if you carry a balance from month-to-month and want to cut down on standard card costs.

  • St.George no annual fee cards

The St.George No Annual Fee credit card offers a $0 annual fee for the life of the card. Outside of any promotions, its interest rate for purchases is 20.99% p.a., which makes it suited to people who can pay off the card each month to take advantage of interest-free days.

  • St.George business credit cards

If you want a credit card for your business spending, you can choose between two with St.George: The St.George Amplify Business Card, which earns you reward points per $1 spent and the St.George BusinessVantage, which offers a low interest rate for purchases. Both of these cards offer you additional cards for your employees, complimentary insurance covers and export options for MYOB, BAS and Microsoft Excel.

Known as Plan&Pay, you can set up an instalment plan for any credit card purchase over $200 that you've made in the previous 30 days, and can cancel it at any time. While there's no interest for these instalment plans, you'll pay an upfront fee of 1% for a 3-month plan, 2% for 6-month plans and 4% for 12-month plans.

The St.George Fraud Money Back Guarantee also means you won't have to cover the cost of fraudulent transactions if they're made on your credit card.

Eligibility criteria

When you apply for a St.George credit card, you'll need to meet a set of eligibility criteria. These are different for each card, but all St.George credit cards have the following requirements:

  • Residency status. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia to apply online. If you are a temporary resident you can apply in-branch or over the phone.
  • Age. You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Credit history. You must have a good credit rating.

How long does it take to apply?

It takes around 10 minutes to apply online if you already have accounts with St.George, and around 20 minutes if you're a new customer. You'll then get a response within 60 seconds of submitting your completed application

If you need more time while you're filling in the application, you can also save it and finish it any time within 30 days from when you started it.

Information and documents you need to apply

St.George credit card applications are made up of a mix of basic, personal details and information that's specific to how you earn income and your other financial responsibilities. This includes the following:

  • Personal information. This includes your full name, date of birth, address and contact details. You also need to provide a valid form of ID, such as your driver’s licence, Medicare card, Passport, Australian birth certificate or NSW Photo Card (if relevant).
  • Employment information. This includes your employment status, occupation, income and your employer's contact details. You may also need to provide recent payslips or other proof of income.
  • If you're self-employed. Provide details of your most recent tax statements and your accountant's contact information.
  • Financial information. As well as income from any other sources, you need to include details of any other assets, savings or investments. You also need to provide information about any debts you have, such as existing credit cards or loans, and regular expenses. If you have earned money overseas, you'll also need to provide details of your foreign tax details.

Have a question about the application? Call St.George on 13 33 30 and someone will be able to help you through the process.

Credit card details

During the application, you'll be asked about details of your new St.George credit card. The two key details to look at are the following:

  • Credit limit. If you have a credit limit in mind for the credit card, you can include a request for that amount as part of the application. Just keep in mind that this is subject to St.George's lending criteria and assessment, and in some cases the actual limit you get could be lower than the one you requested.
  • Balance transfers. If you're moving a debt to a new St.George credit card with a 0% balance transfer rate, you need to include the account details and the amount of debt you want to transfer. Note that the balance transfer is approved separately and the amount that's transferred depends on the credit limit you get for your new St.George card.

What happens after you apply?

You'll get an initial response within 60 seconds of submitting your application online, and someone from St.George will contact you if any more details are needed.

If you're approved, you'll usually get your new credit card in the mail. Note that you may need to get the card from a branch if St.George needs to verify your ID, but you'll be told by St.George if that's the case.
