Our verdict

Offers up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points, complimentary insurances and 2 yearly lounge passes.

The Westpac Altitude Qantas Black Credit Card is a top-tier frequent flyer credit card that currently has one of the biggest bonus point offers on the market. If you apply as a new customer by 30 April 2025, you’ll get 90,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases in the first 120 days. And an additional 30,000 points after the first eligible purchase has been made in the second year (120,000 bonus points total). That’s enough for a return economy flight from Sydney to London (110,400 Qantas Points plus fees and taxes), or a one-way business class flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles (108,400 points plus fees and taxes). But keep in mind that you would have to pay the combined $370 annual fee and rewards fee twice to get all the points. But if you are already banking with Westpac, you can benefit from a discounted annual fee of $225 (including the $75 rewards fee) in the first year.

Pros

  • Up to 120,000 bonus Qantas Points
  • Complimentary insurance covers and airport lounge passes
  • 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent
  • $225 (includes $75 Qantas Rewards fee) first-year annual fee for existing customers

Cons

  • Offers only up to 45 days interest-free on purchases, as compared to other cards that offer up to 55 days
  • Charges a relatively high annual fee of $370 p.a (includes $75 Qantas Rewards fee)

The Westpac Altitude Qantas Black currently has a big bonus points offer and relatively competitive rate of points per $1 when compared to similar frequent flyer credit cards. It also offers complimentary overseas travel insurance, 2 Qantas Club lounge invitations each year, airport lounge passes and other insurance covers. When you're comparing this card to others, remember to weigh the potential value of the points and other perks against the yearly cost to decide if it's right for you.

Will paying an invoice for work carried out be classed as an eligible purchase?

Hey Stewart,

Westpac defines eligible purchases here. https://www.westpac.com.au/faq/spend-and-save-eligible-purchase/

Couldn’t find a clear answer for your situation and I guess it depends how the invoice is paid. If it’s BPAY or direct debit then no.

Can I use this card for my mortgage payments?

Hi Craig,

To use this card to make mortgage payments, you will need to withdraw the money as a cash advance. This means you’ll be paying interest on the money (20%+) from the day you withdraw it, so it’s quite an expensive way to pay your mortgage.

No, with this card, you will not earn points on interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, BPAY or Post Billpay, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

Hi I see your points are only accumulated on what you call approved purchases. I cant find any information on what you deem an approved purchase. Where can I find that information? Thanks

Hi Mick, As the review notes, transactions that won’t earn points include “ATM withdrawals, cash advances, BPAY payments and balance transfers”. Most cards also don’t allow points to be earned on gambling transactions or government payments.
