Can I compare electricity and gas in Tasmania?

The short answer: yes you can, as the energy market in Tasmania is deregulated. The caveat is the choice of retailers can be quite limited.

But don't worry, we'll break it down into two sections so you can get the full picture of how the energy market works in Tassie.

Comparing electricity in Tasmania

A quick history lesson is key to understanding your options, so bear with us – it's all for your benefit.

  • Aurora Energy is the largest electricity retailer for households in Tasmania.
  • When full market competition was introduced in 2014, Aurora operated alone until 1st Energy entered the market in 2019.
  • The Tasmanian Economic Regulator regulates prices for Aurora's standing offer plans, which we use as a benchmark for comparing market offers in Tasmania. These are set each year on 1 July.
  • While standing offer rates tend to be pricier, they provide a safety net for those who don't shop around.

How am I charged for electricity?

You will see two separate charges on your electricity bill:

  • Daily supply charge: This is a fixed daily cost for keeping your home connected.
  • Usage charge: This is how much you will be charged for using electricity. It'll be shown as cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh).

Your usage charge can vary depending on the type of tariff you're on, reflected in the fact that every household uses electricity differently.

Tariff typeDescription
Residential flat rate contractYou'll pay one rate for everything, regardless of when you're using electricity.
Peak and off-peak (tariff 93)This is also known as a Time-of-Use tariff and requires a smart meter. You'll pay cheaper usage rates during off-peak times - Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm and 9pm to 7am, plus all weekends. Peak hour charges will be higher - Monday to Friday, 7am to 10am and 4pm to 9pm.
Off-peak night only (tariff 62)It generally applies to things like off-peak heaters and hot water systems. This tariff is available for 9 hours a day, between 10pm and 7am the following day. It can be used in conjunction with tariff 93 or a flat rate contract.
Controlled load (tariff 63)This applies to households with a separate meter for appliances such as electric hot water systems or pool pumps.
Solar feed-in tariffHouseholds with solar installed may be able to get a solar feed-in tariff for exporting electricity back to the grid. The minimum rate set by the regulator is 8.935 cents per kWh.

As of 1 July 2024, a couple of tariffs have become obsolete: off-peak afternoon boost (tariff 61) and residential flat rate (tariff 31 and 41).

But don't worry - if your household is already on one of these, you can still keep it.
