The short answer: yes you can, as the energy market in Tasmania is deregulated. The caveat is the choice of retailers can be quite limited.
But don't worry, we'll break it down into two sections so you can get the full picture of how the energy market works in Tassie.
A quick history lesson is key to understanding your options, so bear with us – it's all for your benefit.
You will see two separate charges on your electricity bill:
Your usage charge can vary depending on the type of tariff you're on, reflected in the fact that every household uses electricity differently.
Tariff type | Description |
---|---|
Residential flat rate contract | You'll pay one rate for everything, regardless of when you're using electricity. |
Peak and off-peak (tariff 93) | This is also known as a Time-of-Use tariff and requires a smart meter. You'll pay cheaper usage rates during off-peak times - Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm and 9pm to 7am, plus all weekends. Peak hour charges will be higher - Monday to Friday, 7am to 10am and 4pm to 9pm. |
Off-peak night only (tariff 62) | It generally applies to things like off-peak heaters and hot water systems. This tariff is available for 9 hours a day, between 10pm and 7am the following day. It can be used in conjunction with tariff 93 or a flat rate contract. |
Controlled load (tariff 63) | This applies to households with a separate meter for appliances such as electric hot water systems or pool pumps. |
Solar feed-in tariff | Households with solar installed may be able to get a solar feed-in tariff for exporting electricity back to the grid. The minimum rate set by the regulator is 8.935 cents per kWh. |
As of 1 July 2024, a couple of tariffs have become obsolete: off-peak afternoon boost (tariff 61) and residential flat rate (tariff 31 and 41).
But don't worry - if your household is already on one of these, you can still keep it.
Usage rates for electricity will vary depending on your retailer and the type of tariff you're on.
The average price of an electricity plan in Tassie hovers around 28.40 cents per kWh based on flat-rate tariff plans in our database as of November 2024.
