Rimfire Energy review: Our verdict

Because the NT energy market has fully regulated power costs, you'll pay the same amount for power with Rimfire Energy as with any other provider.

However, it has a couple of benefits compared to the NT's major provider, Jacana Energy. You'll get access to 24/7 customer support via webchat and a higher solar feed-in tariff if you have solar panels installed on your house

Beyond that, you might enjoy the following:

  • Rimfire Energy helps property owners install solar panels. They'll provide a free quote if you ring them up.
  • Local customer support based in Darwin.

What's the catch?

  • If you don't have a smart meter, you'll have to get one installed by Rimfire. If you leave Rimfire before 3 years have passed, you'll be charged an early exit fee for your smart meter (maximum ~$750, which decreases the longer you stay with Rimfire).

Rimfire doesn't have any lock-in contracts, so you should be able to switch providers without penalty at any time (so long as you haven't had a smart meter installed)

Where is Rimfire Energy available?

Rimfire is the largest non-government electricity provider in the Northern Territory and sells plans to residents in the following regions:

  • Darwin
  • Katherine
  • Tennant Creek
  • Alice Springs

How good is the feed-in tariff?

Rimfire Energy has great rates compared to the other main provider in the Northern Territory, Jacana Energy.

Jacana offers 9.13c/kWh, while you'll get almost 3 c/kWh higher with Rimfire, which offers 12.1c/kWh.

How green is Rimfire Energy?

Green Electricity Guide rating: 5.59/10

Rimfire Energy came in around the middle of the pack on the Green Electricity Guide, scoring points for actively supporting household solar and not being involved with fossil fuel extraction.

However, it lost points for having low-transparency marketing, for failing to support new renewables and for selling polluting electricity from the grid.

Rimfire doesn't sell GreenPower, which allows customers to pay extra on their energy use to support renewable energy development in Australia.
