The Finder Car Insurance Awards showcase the best car insurance products across three key categories; value, features and low cost. Our methodology has been curated specifically to help drivers find the best fit for their needs by comparing thousands of prices and hundreds of features. See our car insurance winners below.
Best Car Insurance - Value
The best value category winners are for the people who want the most bang for their buck. In a cost of living crisis, price matters more than ever. That's why average costs account for 30% of our overall value score, with 22 different features making up the rest of the rating.
Budget Direct's comprehensive car insurance policy won this year's Finder Award for value because it provides a similar level of cover to other insurers but at a lower price. According to our recent 2024 research, the average policy costs $992 per year. That's cheaper than 27 other insurers including NRMA, AAMI and Allianz.
Hume Bank comprehensive car insurance came in second-place for value out of the 32 eligible comprehensive policies we analysed. It scored highly because it comes with high cover limits for features including hire car, personal items and key replacement, yet still offers a comparatively inexpensive policy. It was the fourth cheapest out of 32 policies.
Virgin comprehensive car insurance ranked in third-place for value out of the 32 eligible comprehensive policies we analysed. This is due to its pricing which sits underneath the national average and its features which are consistent with more expensive policies.
Best Car Insurance - Features
The best features category is for the person who wants the bells and whistles but without the hefty price tag. We compared 814 features and rated every single one of them. We didn't forget about costs though. The final score is based on a 80/20 split of features and price.
Hume Bank won this year's Finder Award for features because it covers more than other insurers but is still a comparatively cheap policy. On average, a Hume Bank policy cost $959.
St George comprehensive car insurance came in second-place for value out of the 32 eligible comprehensive policies we analysed. It scored highly because it comes with some of the highest cover limits available – that includes up to $100 per day for 30 days for a hire car if your vehicle is stolen, $1,000 for stolen personal items and $1,000 for key replacement.
Budget Direct comprehensive car insurance came in third-place for features out of the 32 eligible comprehensive policies we analysed. It offers plenty of options to tailor your cover yet remains comparatively affordable.
Best Car Insurance - Low Cost
The low cost category is for the person who likes a bargain. You want comprehensive cover (e.g. cover for damage to your car as well as others) but you're not looking for much else. These category winners are based solely on price.
Bingle is this year's Finder Award for low cost. If you want a cheap comprehensive policy, it's hard to look past. On average, it was the cheapest comprehensive car insurance policy out of all the eligible providers we got quotes for.
ROLLiN' comprehensive car insurance came in second-place for low cost out of the eligible comprehensive policies we analysed. It's particularly cheap for young drivers.
Hume Bank Comprehensive Car Insurance
Hume Bank comprehensive car insurance came in third-place for low cost. On average, a Hume Bank policy cost $959.

Our car insurance experts compared 35+ policies, 814 features and got 1,800+ quotes to select our car insurance award winners for 2024. The value score was informed by a mix of price and features with price accounting for 30% of the score and features accounting for the other 70%. The features score was also informed by a mix of price and features, this time with price accounting for 20% of the score and features accounting for the remaining 80%. Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
