ING is relatively new to the health insurance game but, in nib, its policies are underwritten by a major brand.
ING offers a comprehensive suite of hospital and extras policies with some solid features and benefits. You can choose your own provider or use one in its network for lower fees and additional discounts. You can also get Gold member treatment regardless of the tier if you have an accident.
ING health insurance: Our verdict
ING's accidental injury benefit gives you Gold Hospital cover for 90 days after an accident even if you're on a lower-tier product.
You'll get access to nib's First Choice network of providers to receive competitive fees, discounts and prescription glasses with no gap.
Outside of a small benefit for gym memberships and health programs, you may find ING lacking if you're looking for a robust lifestyle program.
ING's most affordable level of hospital cover ticks the boxes for the government's minimum requirement for a Basic policy and offers even more on top. You'll find full cover for 8 clinical categories including:
Great for: A higher level cover for those not planning on pregnancy.
The ING Gold Hospital policy covers all 38 clinical categories mandated by the Australian government for all Gold health insurance policies. Some additional cover not found on the ING Silver Plus Hospital policy include:
Essential Extras. This provides a 60% benefit on a basic range of extras including general and major dental, physiotherapy and optical.
Everyday Extras. This plan has the same benefits as Essential Extras with a higher annual limit. Additional services include natural therapies, remedial massage and health aids.
Everyday Advanced Extras. It offers the same range of benefits as Everyday Extras, with additional treatments including orthodontics and podiatry.
Premium Extras. ING's top-level extras plan provides a 75% benefit on a full range of services including pre- and post-natal service, hearing aids, eye therapy and home nursing services.
Additional benefits of cover
In addition to any benefits provided by the policy you choose, ING offers the following to its members:
Accidental injury benefit. Regardless of the tier of service you choose, you'll receive benefits in line with ING's Gold Hospital cover for 90 days after an accident.
nib Choice of provider. You can choose any provider with recognised professional qualifications for extras services such as dental or physio.
ING MediGap. Avoid out-of-pocket costs with your hospital cover by ensuring you receive treatment from a specialist who participates in its MediGap scheme.
Save even more. ING has partnered with nib to give you access to its First Choice Network. These preferred providers offer competitive fees for some dental treatments and physiotherapy consultations plus discounts and prescription glasses with no gap.
Tailored cover. You don't need to choose from a list of specific combined policies. Instead, you can mix and match ING's individual hospital and extras policies.
Ambulance coverage
All ING hospital and extras policies include emergency ambulance cover. This includes emergency transport to the hospital, call-out fees and transport between hospitals when required as a result of the first hospital not specialising in the treatment required.
This doesn't mean you're covered for all ambulance expenses. With an ING health insurance policy, you are not covered for:
Private ambulance services
Private transport services
Transport from the hospital to your home
Transport between hospitals if the transfer is not required due to medical necessity determined by your treating doctor
Questions you've asked about ING health insurance, answered
ING Health Insurance is issued by nib health funds limited ABN 83 000 124 381 (nib).
Many extras providers offer on-the-spot claiming. You'll be able to swipe your ING Health Insurance card to cover the benefit ING pays and then pay any difference. If you forget your card or on-the-spot claiming is not available, keep a copy of the official provider receipt so you can upload a scanned copy or photo of it to ING's online member services.
You won't have to re-serve waiting periods for the same level of cover provided there has been no break in cover of more than 60 days.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
