What does RACQ Home Insurance cover?

RACQ Home Insurance is available for people who live in, or own property in, Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

There are 3 policies available: home insurance which covers the building, contents insurance which covers your belongings, and a combined home and contents insurance policy for those who want complete peace of mind. You can also become an RACQ member and get access to a bunch of discounts and benefits.

Some main events covered by RACQ Home Insurance include the following:

RACQ Home Insurance is issued by RACQ Insurance Limited, one of the largest providers of home insurance in Queensland. Policies come with a cooling-off period of 21 days, which is the industry standard. Exclusions

Before taking out an RACQ Home Insurance policy, you should be aware that certain events and occurrences are not covered under your policy. Your claim will not be paid for the following:

  • Actions of the sea including erosion and king tides
  • Deliberate acts
  • Pests and parasites
  • Roots and trees
  • Rust and mould

  • An act of terrorism or war
  • Wear and tear through normal use

Make sure you read RACQs PDS for a more detailed breakdown of exclusions. You can also head to home insurance general exclusions for more information.

Our Verdict

  • RACQ gives you a heap of chances to save, from loyalty discounts and no claim bonuses to multi-policy discounts and savings for seniors.
  • Flood cover comes standard on its policies and includes cover for storm surge, which is a plus because many other home insurers don’t cover this.
  • RACQ premiums came in at the higher end of home insurance policies on Finder according to our research.

Here’s some information on RACQ Home Insurance complaints

We looked at home insurance complaint data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) between July 2020 and June 2021. The data breaks down different underwriters and compares their business size to the number of complaints processed.

When comparing insurers, keep in mind that insurers with a larger market share serve more customers, so can potentially get more complaints.

Here's an overview of how RACQ (RACQ Insurance Limited) did:

  • RACQ Insurance Limited is considered a large firm and has an average number of complaints when compared to other insurers of this size.
  • It only resolved 30.65% of complaints directly with customers - the rest were escalated to AFCA.

Here's the bottom line about RACQ

RACQ Home Insurance appears to be a well-rounded policy that has a generous flood cover benefit that many Queenslanders would be hunting for. One thing to look out for is its higher than average premium, although RACQ does give you a slew of opportunities to save with discounts and rewards for policyholders.

Not too sure yet? You can compare other home insurance brands side by side so that you end up with a policy you’re happy with.

I’m looking for a quote for landlord insurance and there doesn’t seem to be a category. I assumed it’s a different policy to buildings. Any help finding a quote?

      Hi Bec,

Thanks for leaving a question on Finder.

We have a comparison of landlord insurance. You can press the “Get a quote” button from the table to compare quotes from different brands. Please ensure you review the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions before purchasing a policy.

      Hi Roome,

      Thank you for your question.

You have contacted finder.com.au, a comparison and information service and not actually RACQ Home Insurance.

RACQ Home Insurance does not state anything related to tv antenna in their product disclosure statement, so you will need to contact them directly about this matter.

      Cheers,
      Zubair

I have always felt that RACQ was a trustworthy, solid brand. I had home and contents + car + pet with them last year. When I received the invoice for renewal of home and contents recently, their price increase year on year was 21% for exactly the same insurance. I called and they asked a few questions re history etc and they re-quoted so that the increase was brought down to 18%. I had a couple of conversations with them, asked to speak to supervisors etc, and was told that they had done everything they could to bring the price down but 18% increase was the best they could do. They did say that the price had gone up for many reasons, One was that the online signing up discount from last year no longer applies. Another was that they had revalued the property and the premiums reflected an approx 7% increase in their valuation of the property, therefore attracting higher premiums for the policy. After much talk about why the premiums had increased so much and how they could justify such an increase, they finally said the major amount of the increase was just that they had increased their rates. Discussions about how outraged all Australians are at a 5-6% increase in their health insurance every year, and comparing that to RACQs 18% hike went nowhere in the end. No point event talking to them. So BEWARE – make sure you check the $$ from year to year, and vote with your feet, like I did.

      Hi Virginia,

Thanks for getting in touch. If you have home and contents insurance with RACQ you may have cover for spoiled frozen and refrigerated goods if the damage is caused by an insured event such as the public electricity supply failing at your home.

You will need to contact RACQ directly about this matter to find out if and when you will be covered as cover levels can vary from policy to policy. You should also review your policy document if you can find it.

      All the best,
      Zubair
