Insurance is a grudge purchase so I like to make sure I'm getting something extra in return for paying premiums. Sometimes that's money off my Woolies shop or Qantas Points. Other times, it's 50% off gym memberships and cinema tickets. Basically, I want some good stuff I can enjoy now in addition to financial protection should something go wrong.

Here's a health insurance tip you won't hear from the health funds – you don't need hospital and extras cover from the same insurer. But, it can still be a good idea to bundle. A combined policy from a single fund is easier to manage, and can get you access to some one-off joining deals. However, splitting your cover can sometimes get you policies that suit you better, for a lower overall cost.

Comparing at least 5 insurance quotes from different providers has always been my go-to when it comes to finding a great value policy. Where possible, I'll try to pay for premiums upfront. Many insurers make you fork out more if you choose fortnightly or monthly payments.

During the life insurance application, don't get put off if the insurer asks you heaps of questions about your health and medical history – in the long run, it's usually a good thing. Cover will be more tailored to you and it'll be much clearer what you can and can't claim for. If the insurer doesn't ask any questions (e.g. the policy isn't fully underwritten), some health conditions, including pre-existing conditions, are often automatically excluded.

Think about the single, most important thing that you want covered and look for a policy that covers that. It will most likely cover a bunch of other things too, but trying to find cover for 'everything' can get overwhelming very quickly.

Trying to get the best value insurance for your circumstance can seem overwhelming. With so many coverage options and price differences it can be hard to know which products to consider and how to compare them. Thankfully, the Finder Insurance Awards can help take the hassle out of doing everything yourself. Our products experts first select the features they believe are the most relevant, and then analysts like myself create a mathematical comparison model that scores each product according to its prices and features. This takes out as much bias and complexity as possible so that you can be assured that you can make the best financial decision for yourself.

As someone who spends his life helping Aussies by analysing the insurance and financial space and talking about it in the media, I can tell you that insurance is a little-understood space that can save you – or cost you – hundreds of dollars. If you go to the dentist twice a year, a standard extras policy can pay for itself and you'll still have money left over for the physio.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
