Types of occupation ratings (classes)

There are a number of categories insurers use to classify employees and employers seeking on-the-job insurance. Although the exact names of ratings and definitions will differ between policies, here’s a general guide of the categories used to rate the risk of your employment. You can also search for your specific occupation below.

RatingWhat does this include?Risk levelHow does this rating impact my policy?

High-earning white-collarRefers to white-collar workers who earn a high level of income e.g. $100,000 a year.LowA larger income may be insured
Manual workersTradespeople or skilled labourers who work in a manual and physical capacity.MediumMay have premium loading
Heavy manual workersEmployees who work in a (non-hazardous) heavy manual environment.Medium to highMay have premium loading
Light manual workersJobs that require minimal light manual work (usually under 20%), often involving direct supervision of manual worker e.g. a project manager on site.Low to mediumA larger income may be insured

      Hi Colleen,

When it comes to workers’ compensation insurance (insurance that compensates you for injuries on the job) that will depend on your industry, what state you reside and other factors.

If talking about group insurance e.g. income protection, total and permanent disability insurance or death cover through your employer you will need to check with them.

      I hope this helps,

      Maurice
