iiNet Mobile review: Our verdict

Even though iiNet is famous for its home broadband plans, it actually has a strong set of prepaid plans on offer.

All its mobile plans come at half-price for the first 6-months, making them great value when you first sign-up. However, after the first 6-months the plans become less competitively valued.

iiNet can be a great choice for you if:

  • You're keen for a big sign-up discount. iiNet's offer runs for 6-months, which is a decent promotional period.
  • You're already an iiNet Internet customer. Sign up to its Medium or Large mobile plan and you'll get an additional $5 off on plan fees.
  • You hate contracts. There are no lock-in contracts on any of iiNet's plans so you can switch at any time.
  • You don't want to pay any extra fees other than for the plan itself. iiNet's SIMs are free with your plan, with free delivery.

While it's great bang for your buck, iiNet does have a drawback that makes tracking your plan usage a little difficult:

  • The mobile app has a pretty averege reputation, with recent users reporting serious issues on its usability.

Value for money

When on discount, iiNet's prepaid plans come up as some of the cheapest mobile plans in Finder's database.

When they're not on promotion though, iiNet's plans start at $25 monthly for 25GB and go up to $45 for 100GB. It is also worth pointing out that iiNet offer pretty basic Prepaid plans only, so you won't be getting many bells or whistles that add to the value of the plan.

  • Good to know: For the first 6 months, iiNet's plans cost an average of $0.36 per 1GB, which is excellent against the benchmark of $1 per 1GB. After this discount period this jumps up to $0.72 per 1GB, which is still below the benchmark.

The discount is a great way to see if iiNet's plans suit you, since there are no lock-in contracts.

coverage icon

Coverage

iiNet operates on the Vodafone 4G mobile network and should work especially well for metro customers.
  • Vodafone's mobile network reaches 96% of the Australian population.
  • Your coverage on an iiNet plan will be exactly the same as if you buy a plan directly from Vodafone.
  • You shouldn't have any coverage issues in the metro, but may notice a lack of coverage in rural and regional areas.

Customer Service Icon

Customer service

If you have a query or would like to reach iiNet, here's how you can get in touch:

  • Ring up the technical support team anytime – they operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Send a message to the customer support team via Twitter or Facebook. The team seems fairly responsive.
  • Send an email through to the support team for less urgent queries.
  • Keep in mind: iiNet has a mobile app available to download. However, users have pointed to a number of issues with the app. At the time of writing it had an Apple rating of 1.3/5. Although this is other users opinion and your own experience may differ.

bonus icon

Bonus features

iiNet's mobile plans focus on delivering data for low prices. They do have a couple of extra features, but with limited accessibility.

🌏 International inclusions

The Small plan comes with 100 international call minutes to selected countries.

While the Medium and Large plans includes unlimited international call minutes to selected countries.

💻 Internet and mobile bundle

If you're already an iiNet Internet customer, you can get an additional $5 off on its Medium and Large mobile plan every month.

That means you'll be saving an additional $60 for the first 6 months.

Which rivals are giving iiNet a run for its money?

While iiNet's mobile plans are great especially during the promotional period, there are other strong contenders too.

For more discounts:

Moose Mobile logo

Moose Mobile's also delivers excellent value on its prepaid plans. Its discounts last a full year compared to iiNet's 6 months. It also has Australian customer support and runs on the Optus 4G network.

For better coverage:

boost mobile logo

Boost Mobile is the only other provider to offer full Telstra 4G coverage, reaching 99.5% of the population. If you're worried about coverage but don't want to pay premium prices, consider Boost.

For more features:

aldimobile logo

ALDImobile may not be as cheap as iiNet, but it's still affordable while offering some handy plan features. You get continuous data rollover between months and international calls across all plans.

Ready to sign up to iiNet Mobile?

Once you've decided which iiNet Mobile plan you like, you'll simply have to fill out a few details. From there iiNet Mobile will take care of the rest. SIM delivery is free via standard postage, but can take up to 10 business days to arrive at your door.

phone icon

What if I want to keep my current phone number?

You can easily keep your number during the iiNet activation process. iiNet doesn't list a time frame for the porting process on their website. However, porting usually takes anywhere from a few hours up to 2 days.

It might be trickier if your current number is under someone else's name (a parent or partner). Check our guide on how to transfer ownership of your mobile number.

      Hi Patrick,

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 are both outstanding handsets. Are you looking to stick to Samsung?

      Thanks,
      Brodie
