Save hundreds per year on groceries | Savings with Sarah #19
Pay $7 per month and you could save up to $50 at Woolworths. Sounds like a no-brainer, right?
If you shop at Woolworths, there's very little risk here. You stand to save money, earn more points and enjoy some freebies along the way.
With Woolworths Everyday Extra, you pay $7 a month and in return you get a monthly discount of 10% at Woolworths and 10% at Big W. You can pay for the year upfront and pay even less, equivalent to $5.83 per month.
Woolworths Everyday Extra is an extension of the existing, free Everyday Rewards loyalty program – they're two different things.
You join the Everyday Rewards program for free and earn 1 point per dollar spent and access to cheaper 'members' pricing.
Then you pay to join Everyday Extra, and get:
- an additional 1 point per dollar spent - so 2 points per dollar
- 10% off once per month at Woolies, up to a $500 shop / $50 discount
- 10% off once per month at Big W, up to a $500 shop / $50 discount
- A monthly member benefit, which is often a free item like peanut butter, cake or a dairy item.
Where's the catch?
There is no catch, really.
Except to say, the benefit here only works out if you do at least one "big" shop each month to get the most value. If you tend to shop in smaller batches a few times a week, you probably won't save as much and the membership fee might not be worth it.
You also have to remember to take advantage of spending it on your biggest shop. My husband once used it on a shop worth $67, saving just $6.70.
Also, Woolies wants to encourage you to spend in store (where you're much more likely to cruise the aisles and chuck more impulse buys to your trolley), so the free member item they offer is usually only redeemable if you shop in person.
How much can you actually save?
Finder data shows Aussies spend an average of $188 per week at the supermarket.
I've been a member since November 2022 and since then, I've saved over $400 and claimed about half a dozen freebies.
My savings should be higher, but there was a period of several months where Woolworths changed the rules and only allowed you to access the discount when you shopped in-store. For that period, we didn't get any value – though Woolies did extend our membership for a few months as a goodwill gesture.
Overall, though, for our investment of $59 for the annual plan (since increased to $70), we've saved enough to make it worthwhile signing up again when our plan expires next month.
