How the Finder Score helps you find a better savings account
The Finder Score is a simple score out of 10. The higher a savings account's score, the better we think it is for the average customer.
We score each savings account in our database of hundreds based on a data-driven methodology with 2 main criteria: Does the account offer a high interest rate? And is it easy for savers to actually earn that rate?
How to compare high interest savings accounts
There's more to consider than just the high interest rate. Think about the following when you compare accounts:
- Is the interest rate competitive?
- Can I meet the monthly deposit requirement every month without putting myself into financial stress? If you can't, consider an account with a smaller monthly deposit condition.
- Is it important to me that I keep my existing everyday bank account? If yes, consider a savings account with that same bank.
- Is the high rate for an introductory period only (e.g. for the first 4-5 months)? If it is, will I be happy to change accounts again after this?
- Am I able to make withdrawals from the account if I need to without losing my interest that month?
"I've had 4 different HISA accounts and my view is there are only a few worth having depending on your personal situation. If you are interested in maximising your interest on a balance below $100K, I prefer Ubank as it gives you a high ongoing rate with only one hoop to jump through (the monthly deposit requirement). ING used to hold the crown, but they made it tough to get their bonus rate as you had to deposit more and make 5 transactions on the linked card. CBA's Goalsaver is less competitive but great for those who might be saving larger balances (like for a deposit) as they will pay a decent rate on almost any balance as long as you make a deposit and grow the balance."

Term deposits provide an alternative option to savings accounts where you can lock in your money for longer and potentially earn more interest. Here are a few term deposits which offer an interest rate above 4%p.a.:
