How does Freely travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Freely travel insurance is one of a growing number of insurers that offer some cover for COVID-related claims. The key benefits covered by Freely are:

  • Pre-departure cancellation for trips booked at least 21 days prior to your day of departure
  • Medical expenses if you are diagnosed while on your journey
  • Additional accommodation and/or cancellation costs if you need to quarantine while travelling
  • Repatriation costs if you catch COVID-19 overseas and need to return home

There are some scenarios that are not covered by Freely, including government-imposed quarantine or isolation and multi-night cruises. You should review the Freely travel insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before making a decision on whether this cover meets your needs.

What policies does Freely offer?

Freely offers 2 main types of travel insurance policies: Overseas Explorer and Domestic Explorer. You can apply and purchase a policy from Freely's website or through the app. This is also where you'll find full details of your cover options. Here are some of the main insured events a policy can cover you for:

Domestic Explorer

Freely is administered by Cover-More Insurance Services and the issuer of insurance is Zurich Australian Insurance Limited.

There is a 21-day cooling-off period, which means if you change your mind and decide to cancel your policy within this period, Freely will refund your premium in full. The excess is $250 for the Overseas Explorer policy and $50 for the Domestic Explorer. Special excesses may apply for COVID-19 claims and optional add-ons.

Optional add-ons

Freely travel insurance's main difference is the sheer amount of additional cover you can add on to tailor your insurance policy. Freely's add-ons are referred to as "Boosts". Some of the Boosts cover you for your entire trip, while for others you can choose which days you will need the cover and pay for just that period.

  • Specified Items Cover
  • Gadget Cover
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Flight Inconvenience Bundle
  • Cruise Cover
  • Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess
  • Adventure Activities

  • Snow Sports Cover

Exclusions

When considering insurance policies, it's very important to consider which circumstances will not be covered. These are usually listed as "general exclusions" in a PDS. Freely won't cover you when your claim arises if:

  • It is a result of war, invasion, the act of a foreign enemy, rebellion or revolution
  • It is related to any unlawful act committed by you
  • You decide to travel against medical advice or to obtain medical treatment
  • It is related to pregnancy after the start of the 24th week, childbirth or any medical complication you were already aware of
  • It is due to the chronic use of alcohol, substance abuse or the ingestion of any non-prescription drug
  • It relates to a pre-existing medical condition you have not had approved by Freely
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide
  • Participating in hunting, hang gliding or running with the bulls

Make sure you review Freely's PDS for a detailed breakdown of what is and isn't covered.

How to make a Freely travel insurance claim

As with other aspects of Freely, the easiest way to make a claim is through its app:

  1. Open the app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Follow the prompts to answer the questions relevant to your claim.
  3. Complete the checklist of supporting documents.
  4. Submit claim.

If you are unable to upload all the supporting documents or simply prefer not to use the app, you can email Freely at claims@gofreely.help.

Alternatively, you can mail your documents to:

Here's the bottom line about Freely travel insurance

For those who embrace the ease and portability of a mobile app, Freely will be a refreshing change. You can apply for your travel insurance, add on optional cover as you go and even claim if you need to, all through the Freely app. It's one of the most customisable policies we've seen, which means you'll only pay for the cover that you need.

The sole reliance on an app can also mean that some people will get left behind if they're not comfortable setting up and maintaining a travel insurance policy all through their mobile phone. If you have pre-existing conditions that are not listed as standard, you'll be out of luck as well here.
