Can I get NBN 1000?

Not everyone can get NBN 1000. Only those with FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) or HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection types can sign up.

Not sure what NBN connection you have? You check on a provider's website directly or pop in your address in our address checker.

If you don't have access to NBN 1000, check out NBN 100 plans instead. These are still fast enough for households of 4+ people.

You may qualify for NBN Co's fibre upgrade program

NBN Co is providing a free fibre upgrade program that could make you eligible for NBN 1000 speeds.

By the end of 2025, over 10 million homes and businesses currently on fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) or fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) will be upgraded to fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP).

To trigger the upgrade, you'll need to sign up for an NBN 100 plan or faster. Simply visit NBN Co's website, enter your address, and check your eligibility.

How fast is NBN 1000?

NBN 1000 is also known as ultrafast internet, offering a maximum download speed of 1000Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps.

That's enough to run a small business and may likely be an overkill for the average home.

It's 10 times faster than an NBN 100 plan, which is already good enough for households of 4+ where people are actively online, even simultaneously.

The actual speeds you get on NBN 1000 will depend on the provider you sign up with and what they've advertised as their typical evening speed.

According to the ACCC's Internet Activity Report, only 3.4% of households are on an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 speed tier. For context, 52.9% of households are signed up to NBN 50 and 16.1% to NBN 100.

How much do NBN 1000 plans cost?

The average cost of fixed-line NBN 1000 plans in Finder's database is around $133 a month as of October 2024.

However, there are plenty of sign-up deals that can discount the monthly price for the first 3-6 months to $95 a month or sometimes even lower.

Some providers also offer ongoing prices of around $110 a month - you just need to shop around.

Is NBN 1000 worth it?

NBN 1000 is a good option if you want reaaaally fast download and upload speeds.

However, it's overkill for most, and may not be worth spending the extra dollars.

Here's a quick pros and cons list to help you make a decision:

Pros

  • Offers speeds up to 1Gbps (1000Mbps), perfect for intensive activities like running multiple 4K or 8K streams and large file transfers
  • Unlikely you'll face a lag or slow speeds with online gaming, live streaming or video conferencing via Zoom or Google Meet.
  • You're set for any tech upgrades and future internet demands
  • Wholesale NBN price changes have led to price cuts for faster speeds from several providers

Cons

  • May be too much for a typical household's internet usage and you could save money with a lower speed tier instead
  • Only available to households with an FTTP or HFC NBN connection

Sometimes getting faster speeds is more for peace of mind than anything. It's similar to getting a high data mobile plan even when you don't realistically use much data.

If that sounds like your household, consider starting off with an NBN 100 plan and then switching to faster speeds if that doesn't cut it.

Tim Bennett's headshot

"I got gigabit internet in my new apartment and it's been an absolute game changer. Super fast uploads and downloads, great quality streaming and video game streaming works like a charm. Even if you're just browsing the internet, it's amazing to have better internet than I have in my office! I ended up going with Exetel because they had the best price at the time."

Insurance expert

NBN 1000 vs NBN 250

Our top tip is to always try a lower speed tier first before committing money towards faster internet speeds.

So instead of going for NBN 1000 from the get-go, try NBN 250 instead.

  • NBN 250 is good enough for a household of 5+ people with multiple heavy internet users.
  • The average monthly cost of fixed-line NBN 250 plans on Finder is $115 a month as opposed to $133 for NBN 1000.
