Our verdict
Pros
Accessories and modifications are covered as standard on comprehensive policies.
Cover for personal effects is generous - Up to $1,000
Get a 10% discount if you take the AAMI Skilled Driver Course
Cons
You can't choose your own repairer, which could be inconvenient for some drivers
Your policy will be more expensive if you want to pay monthly
No cover for key replacement, which is commonly offered by other insurers
How does AAMI compare with other car insurers?
AAMI offers a good level of cover at a reasonable price. While some common benefits are missing, this is reflected in the cost of policies.
You'll get access to a wide range on add-ons with an AAMI policy, including:
Hire car after an incident. AAMI will provide Up to $90 per day for a hire car if your car is out of action due to an event or incident - even if it's your fault. Cover lasts until your claim is settled or you get your car back.
Windscreen & window glass cover. Add this cover to your policy and you won't have to pay an excess if you need repairs or a replacement of your windscreen, window glass or sunroof. Only one excess-free claim per year.
Roadside assist. Add roadside assist to your policy for 24-hour unlimited callouts. Cover includes help for flat tyres and batteries, lost or locked-in keys, and towing.
What's not covered with an AAMI Car Insurance policy?
There's a fair bit covered with an AAMI policy, but there's some things that are missing including:
Roadside assistance: Some insurers offer this as a free inclusion on policies, but with AAMI you'll have to pay a little bit extra.
Choice of repairer: Also a feature included with some other insurers, AAMI won't let you choose you repairer. If you have a family friend mechanic, you probably won't be able to nominate them to fix your car.
Remember, the cost of car insurance is influenced by a broad range of factors including age, location, vehicle, and driving history. Your quote will differ and the above should be used as a guide only.
Each year, our experts and insights team asks Australians to score their car insurance provider. As part of the Car Insurance Customer Satisfaction Awards for 2024, we asked Australians to rate their car insurer on value for money, features and benefits, ease of application and customer service. Of the insurers scored, these were the top 3. See our methodology for how each provider was scored.

There is no doubt that AAMI is a little more expensive, however you know the claims experience is hassle free and it is backed by a major QLD company

Have claimed with them in the past and their service was outstanding. Premiums are competitive and easy to understand their policies

"Prior to signing up with AAMI, my comprehensive car insurance exceeded $1,000 annually. After a brief market comparison, I noticed AAMI offered the most competitive rate. The quote and policy acquisition process was simple and easy to navigate, and resulted in cost savings of almost $400 per year! I've been with AAMI for nearly five years now, and have only made one claim. It's important to note that the policy limits your choice of repair shops. This is a factor to consider when evaluating your insurance needs. However, AAMI offers a streamlined claims process, allowing you to file online or by phone. Their customer service team are really responsive and the claims experience was really smooth."

If you’ve paid for a year’s worth of insurance, then you can look into canceling your policy with the insurer and get a refund. The insurer should just charge you for the month(s) you were with them, and then refund the rest.
As for the unused portion of your registration including CTP, depending on your state, the insurer will take off the remaining value of your unused registration and CTP insurance from your payout. You can recover your unutilized CTP from your CTP insurer and obtain a refund for your unused registration from your state’s Roads or Transport Authority.
Thanks for getting in touch! Fees depend on the type of policy you have or will have with AAMI. There are no additional admin fees when you apply for car insurance. HI,
If I get a 12 month cover for $700 and after one or two month, I want to cancel my insurance. How much cancellation fee would be charged?
Finder
JasonDecember 16, 2016Finder
Hi Ozman,
Thank you for your enquiry.
According to the PDS of AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance, The amount of the cancellation fee is $30 (plus (if applicable) FSL plus GST plus stamp duty) for each car insured on the policy.
The cancellation fee is deducted from any refund that AAMI will send you. If the refund is less than the fee, a refund will not be issued and AAMI will not charge you an additional amount to cover the difference.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
