Am I covered for motorcycles in business use?

While you might be covered for the motorcycle itself there might be some aspects that won't be covered, e.g. your business expenses. You might want to also consider small business insurance from Youi.

When won't I be covered?

Your Youi motorcycle insurance claim will not be paid if:

  • It is for loss or damage to any illegal property or item.
  • It is for loss or damage to any insured property as a result of theft or attempted theft by deception.
  • It relates to the death or injury of any person who is covered (or who should be covered) under a statutory compensation fund or scheme.
  • You admit liability that would otherwise not have existed at law.
  • It is caused by the intentional or deliberate acts or omissions of you or someone else covered under your policy.
  • It arises due to any illegal activity, or because your property is being used for any illegal activity.
  • It is for fines, penalties or aggravated or exemplary damages.
  • It is caused by the legal repossession, confiscation or destruction of any item.
  • It relates to any event that occurred outside Australia.
  • It relates to rust, corrosion, gradual deterioration or wear and tear.
  • It is caused by mould, damp or the effects of climate or weather.
  • It is caused by a process of restoring, cleaning, repairing or modifying the motorcycle.
  • It is for mechanical, electrical or electronic breakdown or failure.
  • It is caused by poor or faulty design specifications, materials or workmanship.
  • It is for the repair of any damage that existed prior to the commencement of cover.
  • It is for loss of value or depreciation of the motorcycle.
  • It is for consequential loss of any kind.
  • It is for damage to tyres caused by wear and tear, braking, punctures, cuts, bursts or deflation.
  • It is for flood, storm or bushfire during the first 72 hours of your policy.
  • It arises because your motorcycle was being ridden by someone who did not have your permission to ride (unless stolen).
  • It is being used on any racetrack or raceway.
  • The motorcycle was being used by someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • The motorcycle was being used in a reckless manner.

For a full list of exclusions, ensure you always check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

How much is it going to cost me?

There are several factors that influence the cost of your Youi motorcycle insurance premium, including:

  • The make, model and age of your motorcycle
  • What your motorcycle is used for, for example private or business use
  • The age, driving and riding experience of any insured rider
  • The claims history of any insured rider
  • The value of any extra options you decide to add on to your policy
  • Your choice of payment method
  • Any administration costs, taxes and other government charges

What excess will I be charged?

You’ll need to pay an excess for each and every claim you make on your Youi motorcycle insurance policy. The excess you will pay will be the basic excess plus any additional excesses that apply to your policy.

The basic excess applies to every claim and will be shown on your policy schedule. However, if the insured event is the fault of a third party whom can be identified, your basic excess payment may be waived.

There are other options that can affect the amount of excess you pay, including:

  • Reduced basic excess for windshield claims. You may be able to pay an extra premium to reduce the basic excess you’ll need to pay for claims that solely involve your windshield.
  • Additional excess. Any circumstances where you may need to pay an additional excess will be shown on your policy schedule.
  • Unlisted rider excess. This excess is payable when you make a claim for an insured event where your motorcycle was ridden with your permission by someone not listed on your policy schedule.

How do I make a claim with Youi for my motorbike?

If you wish to make a claim on your Youi motorcycle insurance policy, take note that you’ll need to make a separate claim for each incident. You can notify Youi of your claim as soon as possible by filling out an online form or phoning the insurer direct.

There are also a few simple steps you can take to ensure that your claim is paid promptly and in full, including:

  • Taking all reasonable steps to prevent or reduce loss or damage, even after an insured event
  • If you’re the victim of theft, attempted theft or intentional damage, report the matter to the police and obtain a written copy of the incident report
  • Allow Youi to view and inspect any damaged goods or property you are claiming for
  • Don’t leave the scene of an accident until you are lawfully allowed to do so
  • Provide any information or documents the insurer requests in order to assess your claim
