What excess will be charged?
You may be required to pay an excess when you make a car insurance claim. The following excesses may apply to your National Seniors car insurance policy:
- Basic excess. The basic excess is the minimum amount payable on all claims. You can choose to increase your excess amount to receive lower premiums.
- Age excess. This excess is payable when you make a claim for an accident that occurs when your vehicle was being driven by someone under 25 years of age.
- Undeclared young driver excess. You’ll need to pay this excess when your vehicle was being driven by someone under 25 years of age who is not listed in your policy schedule.
- Inexperienced driver excess. If you make a claim for an incident when your vehicle was being driven by someone over 25 years of age who has not held their current driver’s licence for more than two consecutive years.
- Theft excess. You will need to pay this excess when you make a claim for theft or attempted theft.
- Driver excess. This excess must be paid if the insurer has imposed an excess on a specific driver listed on your policy.
- Unnamed driver excess. The $2,500 unnamed driver excess applies when you have chosen the named driver option but your vehicle was being driven at the time of an accident by someone not listed on your policy as a named driver.
- Restricted driver excess. The $2,500 restricted driver excess is payable if you have chosen the restricted driver option but your car was being driven by someone under 25 years of age at the time of an accident.
Is this insurance right for me?
National Seniors Car Insurance has a number of eligibility requirements. For example, your vehicle will need to be roadworthy and registered with the relevant transport authority in Australia. The underwriter of this insurance, Allianz, specifies that the likely financial situation its products are suited to is as follows: "Persons who are able to pay premiums in accordance with the chosen premium structure, and any excess in the event of a claim in accordance with the chosen excess option."
It's crucial that you read the National Seniors' Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to determine if this car insurance will meet your needs and circumstances.
Steps to save on your policy
The following tips can help you lower the cost of your National Seniors car insurance premiums:
- Choose a higher excess. You can accept a higher excess in return for lower premiums.
- Name covered drivers. Restricting cover to named drivers only can lower the cost of your policy.
- Restrict the age of drivers. If you restrict cover to drivers 25 years or older, you can benefit from cheaper premiums.
- Buy online. You can save up to 10% if you purchase your Comprehensive policy online.
- Avoid making claims. A maximum no-claim discount of 65% is available, while National Seniors car insurance also offers a further 10% discount to eligible safe drivers.
Making a claim
It’s quick and easy to make a claim on your National Seniors car insurance policy. Allianz, the issuer of the insurance, offers a 24/7 claims process, allowing you to lodge your claim online or over the phone.
You’ll need to have your policy number ready when you make a claim and you may also be asked to provide:
- Full details of the incident, including when and where it occurred
- The names, contact information and insurance details of any other drivers involved
- The details of any witnesses
- A police incident report number (in the case of theft and vandalism claims)
- Proof of ownership of your vehicle
