  • Credit card instalment plans

Coles credit cards offer three types of instalment plans, which give you a way to pay off your credit card balance over a set period of time, with fixed monthly repayments that can make it easier to budget. The options available depend on the type of spending or balance and are subject to eligibility.

PlanDescription
Statement instalmentsConvert retail purchases from your closing balance into a structured payment plan, with a minimum of $500 and monthly instalment repayments.
Transaction instalmentsConvert new shopping to a payment plan before it shows up on your statement. You can do this with any eligible purchase over $50.
Cash instalmentsAccess a minimum of $500 and up to 90% of your available credit limit as cash for bills, study or anything else you need and pay it off in instalments. This option is similar to a small personal loan, but make sure you check the rates and fees so you know how much it will cost before you get it.

You can check if you're eligible for an instalment plan by calling Coles Mastercard on 1300 066 985. Once a plan is set up, you'll see details on your credit card statement. Learn more about using instalment plans on a credit card to see if they'll work for you.

  • Security

These cards offer 24/7 account security through Coles Shield and Mastercard Zero Liability for fraudulent transactions.

Eligibility criteria

Before you can get a Coles credit card, there are a few eligibility boxes you need to tick. Each card has its own list of criteria, but these are the ones you'll need to meet for all of them:

  • Age. You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Residency status. You must be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia.

How long does it take to apply?

You can apply for a Coles Mastercard online in about 10 minutes if you have all the details you need ready. Once you submit the application form, you'll also get a response within 60 seconds.

Information and documents you need to apply

During the application, you'll need to provide a mix of details about your personal and financial situation. This includes:

  • Financial details. Your income and assets, including savings or investment returns. Plus your share of regular expenses such as mortgage payments, rent, utility bills and supermarket shopping.
  • Details if you're employed full-time or part-time. Your main occupation, type of employment and your employer's contact details. Plus supporting documentation, such as your two most recent payslips, bank statements showing your income or your most recent Tax Assessment Notice.

If you don't have these documents, you could submit your two most recent Individual Tax Returns and two most recent Individual Notices of Assessment from the Australian Taxation Office.
  • If you're retired or on a pension. Details about your finances and supporting documentation such as your most recent pension statement, an annual superannuation statement with an indexed pension amount, a letter from Centrelink or three months of personal bank statements showing regular credits or cash deposits.

Get income from a mix of sources? Include as much supporting documentation as possible for your application. Or, call Coles on 1300 265 727 to talk about your situation.

Credit card details

During the application, you'll also be asked about details of your new credit card. The two key details to look at are:

  • Current Flybuys number. You can include your Flybuys membership number on the application so that your details are printed on the back of your Coles credit card if your application's approved. If you're not a Flybuys member, you can also join for free by visiting the Flybuys website – and can update the Flybuys details linked to your card through the Coles Online Service Centre.
  • Credit limit. If you have a credit limit in mind, you can include that as part of the application. Note that Coles will offer you a credit limit based on its assessment of your application, which could be lower than the one you've requested.
  • Balance transfers. If you're moving a debt to a new Coles card with a 0% balance transfer rate, you need to include the account details and the amount of debt you want to transfer. Just keep in mind that the balance transfer is approved separately and the amount that's transferred depends on the credit limit you get for your new Coles card.

What happens after you apply?

When you submit your completed application form, you'll get a response within 60 seconds giving you an initial outcome. Coles will also send you an email with a summary and application reference number. You'll also get details about providing more supporting documentation (if that's needed).

      Hi Jonny,

      Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, the $50 *Kmart Gift Card bonus will only be given if you have submitted the secure online application before 31 August 2016 and used the promotion code ‘PROMO1’ and made an eligible purchase (excluding cash advances) within 30 days of card approval.

If you’ve missed using the promo code when you applied for the card, I’m afraid you’ll not be eligible to receive the bonus gift card from Kmart. Though depending on the credit card you got, you are still entitled to receive other benefits attached to your card.

      Cheers,

    Hi,

I am looking at having a cosmetic medical procedure that will cost approx $12,000 in March 2016.

Can you confirm that if I sign up for a credit card this would qualify as an interest free purchase?

    Thanks

      Hi Kevin,

      Thanks for your question.

Coles list ineligible purchases as cash advances, credit fees or charges, credits, refunds, reimbursements, business purchases or balance transfers into your account. If you’re unsure, you may need to contact Coles on 1300 306 397 to confirm that your surgery is considered an eligible purchase.

      Cheers,

Hi Jonathan, so far all of my transactions aren’t being classed as “Interest Free Purchases” when I view them through the online Coles Mastercard portal.

Hi Desmond, thanks for your response.

If your transactions are not being classed as eligible purchases it would be ideal to contact Coles directly on 1300 306 397 to resolve the way your transactions are being charged. The operating hours are Mon-Fri 8.00am – 9.00pm, Saturday 8.00am – 8.00pm, Sunday 8.30am – 8.00pm.

      Cheers,

I wanted to take advantage of the “0% p.a. for 15 months” interest free offer advertised here however the link to the application returned a 404 error. I instead applied directly through Coles, got approved but have since found out that my transactions aren’t being classed as interest free transactions in my account. Is there something you need to do?

      JonathanDecember 2, 2015Finder

Hi Roger, thanks for your inquiry!

The interest free promotion applies to any eligible purchases, which exclude transactions such as cash advances or cash equivalent transaction. To allow us to assist you further what types of transactions are not being classed as interest-free transactions?

      Cheers,

      Jonathan
