How can I earn Flybuys points on my credit card?

You can earn Flybuys Points when you sign up for a free Flybuys membership and spend money at eligible retailers. This includes Coles, Target, Kmart, Liquorland and Bunnings. You don't need a credit card to do this.

But you can even more points by shopping at those retailers with the right credit card.

  1. Earn more points when you spend. Many of the credit cards listed on this page let you earn more Flybuys points when you spend. If a card has an earn rate of 1 point per $1 spent, this means you'd earn 100 Flybuys Points on the card when shopping at Coles or Bunnings. This is in addition to the Flybuys points you'd already earn just for shopping. Depending on the card you could double your earn rate. Coles credit cards and some Citi Rewards cards let you earn Flybuys this way.
  2. Bonus points offers when you sign up. Many cards have a generous bonus points offer when you sign up for the card. This could earn you tens or even hundreds of thousands of Flybuys Points. You often have to qualify for the bonus points by spending a certain amount on the card in the first few months after sign up.
  3. Convert points from other card rewards programs. With a Citi Rewards card or a Suncorp Bank Rewards card you can earn points in those respective programs and then convert them to Flybuys Points.

Keep in mind: You'll need to provide your Flybuys membership number when you apply or after you activate your account to be able to earn Flybuys points with a credit card.

Transferring credit card points to Flybuys

If you have a Citi Rewards or Suncorp Rewards credit card, you can transfer points to your Flybuys account.

Rewards programPoint transfer rate
Citi Rewards1.33 Citi Rewards points = 1 Flybuys point
Suncorp Rewards1.33 Suncorp Bank Rewards points = 1 Flybuys point

Example: How many Flybuys points can I earn with a credit card?

The amount of points you'll get from a Flybuys credit card depends on the card, its earn rate and how much you spend.

Let's say you took out a Coles Rewards Mastercard. This card has an earn rate of 2 Flybuys points per $1 on eligible spending (up to $3,000 per statement period and then 1 point per $1 up to $8,000 per statement period after that).

It also has a bonus offer of 50,000 Flybuys Points if you spend $3,000 on eligible purchase in the first 3 months. Let's assume your monthly card spending in one year averages out to $2,000 a month.

  • Bonus points: 50,000
  • Points earned on card spending (2 points per dollar): 48,000
  • Total = 98,000 Flybuys Points.

And you'd also earn a further 24,000 Flybuys Points on the spending (you get 1 point per dollar spent as a Flybuys member).

How to redeem Flybuys points earned with a credit card

Once the Flybuys points earned with your credit card have been added to your account, you can redeem them for cash off your shop, retail items, travel, Velocity Points and other rewards offered through the Flybuys rewards program in a few steps:

  1. Go to https://experience.flybuys.com.au/ or the Flybuys app and log in to your account.
  2. Shop for rewards and choose the one you want.
  3. Follow the prompts to finalise your redemption.

You can also redeem points by calling the Flybuys service centre at 13 11 16.

What are the pros and cons of using a Flybuys credit card?

Pros

  • Earn points as you spend. A Flybuys-linked credit card will reward your everyday credit card spending at eligible retailers.
  • Instantly convert points to cash. With Flybuys-linked Coles credit cards, you can instantly convert 2,000 Flybuys points into $10 off your next shop at any Coles store.
  • Free membership. Certain frequent flyer programs require that you pay a registration or annual fee, but the Flybuys program doesn't charge such a fee. Please note that your credit card may come with an annual fee, though.
  • Get more than flights. You can redeem your Flybuys points for more than flight rewards. You can also get gift cards, convert your points to cash, or choose from an array of merchandise.
  • Convert points into frequent flyer points. If you'd prefer, you can also transfer your Flybuys points to a Virgin Velocity frequent flyer account.
  • Enjoy bundled discounts. With attractive incentives to spend within the large network of Flybuys partners, you can save money or earn multiple Flybuys points by taking up exclusive partner promotions.

Cons

  • Fewer options. Not many cards are directly linked to the Flybuys program, which limits your choices to a few card providers.
  • Higher annual fee for faster earn rate. The Coles Rewards Mastercard charges a $99 annual fee to earn up to 2 points for every $1 spent, compared to the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard which lets you earn 0.5 points per $1 spent.
  • Limited travel benefits. You may be disappointed if you're looking for benefits like priority check-ins, travel insurance cover and lounge access. Unlike traditional frequent flyer programs, Flybuys doesn't directly offer these.
  • Restrictions. Flybuys customers are limited to earning points only with partner merchants, so you'll want to make sure that its network of partner stores caters for your existing spending habits.
  • Expiry. Flybuys points and dollars will expire if you fail to earn or redeem points for 12 consecutive months.

Can flybuys be linked to Qantas frequent flyers?

      AvatarFinder
      JacobMay 7, 2013Finder

Hi Adrianne. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately you are not able to do this. These two frequent flyer programs are in competition of each other, so you have to choose to earn one or the other. You can have a membership with each program and link a card to each membership, and earn points for each that way. But there is no linking or transferring between the two programs. Let me know if there’s anything else you would like to know. Jacob.
