Top 10 ways to join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free

Get the perks and prestige of being a Qantas Frequent Flyer member without paying the $99.50 sign-up fee.

From credit cards to partner retailers, we've found all the different ways you can join Qantas Frequent Flyer family for free. The Qantas Frequent Flyer program lets you turn your travel and everyday purchases into Qantas Points for flights and other rewards.

How can I join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free?

You can join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program for free in 3 easy steps:

  1. Choose one of the methods we've listed below to skip the usual $99.50 joining fee
  2. Complete the application form on the Qantas Frequent Flyer website
  3. Accept Qantas' terms and conditions

1. Get a Qantas Frequent Flyer credit card

Not only will these cards give you a free membership, you'll earn Qantas Points for every eligible dollar you spend. Frequent flyer credit cards also offer bonus points and travel perks like complimentary insurance and airline lounge passes.

Most of these cards do incur their own annual fee and only waive original the Frequent Flyer membership fee. The Qantas American Express Discovery Card is one example of a card without an annual fee either, although its earning rate is on the lower side.

2. Sign up through Woolworths Everyday Rewards

Everyday Rewards and Qantas Frequent Flyer are partnered programs. You can sign up on the Qantas website OR via the Woolworths Everyday Rewards app. On the app, simply choose to convert your Everyday Rewards points for Qantas Points and during the process of linking your accounts Woolworths will set up your Frequent Flyer account for you.

3. Get a transaction account that's linked to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program

If you'd prefer a transaction account, you can receive complimentary membership to the Qantas Frequent Flyer program if you sign up to the Bankwest Qantas Transaction Account or Qudos Qantas Points Saver. Both let you earn points on savings, though the conditions are very different and you should compare carefully to make sure you're also earning the interest rate you want and not paying account keeping fees. Here's Finder's analysis of how the two accounts compare.

4. Download the Qantas Wellbeing app

The Qantas Wellbeing app lets you earn points for different health goals. While it's designed to offer more benefits to people who have eligible Qantas Health Insurance cover, anyone with a Qantas Frequent Flyer account can download and start using the app. The disclaimers on the Qantas Insurance page also state that the joining fee "will be waived if you join when you download the App".

5. Sign up via Uber

Connecting your Uber and Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts has 2 benefits: free Frequent Flyer membership and you can earn 1 Qantas Point for every $1 you spend on eligible trips to and from airports. Eligible Uber trips are those made to or from the following airports: Adelaide, Avalon, Brisbane, Ballina Byron, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Hobart, Maroochydore, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, Toowoomba and Townsville.

6. Get the ingogo app

This taxi app gives you a way to earn Qantas Points on your bookings – and offers complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership through its website. Once you've downloaded the app, you can link your Qantas Frequent Flyer account to earn 1 point per $1 spent on eligible taxi trips.

7. Sign up to HOYTS Rewards

Register for a free HOYTS Rewards account and also sign up for free Qantas Frequent Flyer membership. Once your accounts are connected you can earn points on your movie ticket and candy bar purchases.

8. Switch to Red Energy

Red Energy customers can earn 2 Qantas Points per $1 on their electricity bills on certain Red Energy plans like a Qantas Red Saver or Qantas Red Plus. You can also get a free Frequent Flyer membership via the promo link.

9. Join via Superhero

Share trading app Superhero has partnered with Qantas Frequent Flyer and new or existing Superhero customers can join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free. Customers can earn 500 Qantas points per trade on their first 10 trades, then 100 Qantas points on all following trades, through until June 2024.

10. Get a Qantas Pay card

When you sign up for the Qantas Pay card, you can join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program for free. This card doubles as your prepaid travel card and your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership card, so you'll only need to carry 1 card in your wallet. The card also offers up to 10 international currencies, locks in exchange rates and allows you to earn points as you spend in Australia and overseas.

      Hi Hahane,
Anyone can become a Qantas Frequent Flyer member. Simply choose one of the methods outlined in the article to sign up for free.
Even though you’ve already flown you can still claim points on eligible flights within the past 12 months.
      Hope that helps,
      Stephanie

My wife and I are planning a 4 week European holiday in June 2019. I am told I would be best to use a credit card to make these purchases and to get a Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) membership. Can you assist me with what credit card would be the best option with bonus points and annual fees etc and how to get QFF without annual fee linked to card. What’s my best option please? Thanks

      Hi Simon,

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

While there is no “one ideal card”, you need to compare your options based on your individual needs and circumstances to determine whether a card is right for you. With no annual fee for frequent flyer credit cards, consider whether the purchase you’ll have to make to earn the reward points suits your financial plan. You should also look at the regular earn rate and the rewards on offer, making sure that you know how you can maximise your points and how you can use them once they accumulate in your balance. You should also consider other costs such as the interest rate on purchases, cash advance rate, and any overseas foreign transaction fees to understand how much the card could cost, even without an annual fee.

      I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

      Cheers,
      Jeni

      Hi Bob!

Thanks for your questions and for contacting finder – a leading comparison website and general information service built to give you advice on your buying decision needs.

To get the Qantas joining fee waived, you need to sign up using a promo code.

If you’re an Australian resident and you join the Qantas Frequent Flyer program via the Qantas website, you can use the promo code FAMILYFREE to waive the sign up fee. You won’t need to enter the promo code anywhere, but if you sign up via the link provided by finder that will direct you to the Qantas website, you’ll see the code is already in the URL.

For more information, you can click this link: https://www.finder.com.au/frequent-flyer/free-qantas-frequent-flyer-membership

      Hope this helps!

      Kind regards,

      Nikki
