How to buy Velocity Frequent Flyer Points

Get reward flights faster by purchasing Velocity Points - here's what you need to know.

Key takeaways

  • Buying Velocity Points costs between $23.40-$36 per 1,000 Points.
  • The more points you buy, the cheaper it is per point.
  • Only buy points for premium rewards - the value is usually not worth it for domestic flights.

Have you ever missed out on a reward or a flight because you didn't have enough points to redeem it? Velocity Frequent Flyer members can buy Velocity Points to top up their balance.

Can you buy more Velocity Points?

You can buy Velocity Points online by following these three steps:

  1. Visit the Velocity website and nominate how you think you'll redeem your points.
  2. Log in to your Velocity account.
  3. Select how many Velocity Points you want to buy and complete your transaction.

You will need to have an existing points balance in order to buy points.

How many Velocity Points can I buy?

You can use the Velocity Points Booster to buy between 1,000 and 250,000 Velocity Points per calendar year, with a maximum of 150,000 in any one transaction. You can purchase 1,000 to 30,000 points in 1,000 points increments, 30,000 to 50,000 points in 5,000 points increments and 50,000 to 150,000 points in 10,000 points increments.

Is it worth it to buy Velocity Points?

Depending on how you redeem it (business redemptions are better value than economy) 1 Velocity Point is worth between 0.4 cents and 4 cents. When you purchase points, they cost between 2.34c and 3.6c each (see below). So, it's not always great value to buy points, as you can end up spending more on the points than the value you gain when redeeming them.

Instead of buying points, it may be better value to apply for a credit card that earns Velocity Points and boost your balance this way.

Our expert says

"Buying Velocity Points is only going to make sense if you spot a great rewards option and are just a few points short - and quite honestly Virgin needs to enhance its international routes more before that becomes a major consideration. You'll likely get better bang for buck with a good sign-up offer for a Velocity card."

Is 250,000 the maximum or is it 50,000? The article states both in consecutive paragraphs.
