Get the lowdown on Finder Score

Each month we analyse over 10,000 hospital and extras insurance products and rate each one on price and features. What we end up with is a nice round number out of 10 that helps you compare products a bit faster.

Before we start scoring, we need to make sure we're comparing like-for-like. Just as it doesn't make sense to compare a toy car with a Porche, it doesn't make sense to compare basic policies to top-tier gold policies. Each policy is given a price score and feature score. These are then combined to determine each policies's Finder Score. Read our full methodologies of how we calculated Finder Score for hospital cover and extras cover.

How to make a claim

For hospital claims

You usually won't receive a bill if your procedure is covered by your policy, you go to an nib Agreement Private Hospital, and your specialists participate in nib's MediGap scheme. You'll just have to pay any excess that applies.

If you do receive a hospital bill and you're covered for the procedure, you can make a claim online via the Qantas Health Insurance' self-service portal. You can also call Qantas Health Insurance on 13 49 60 if you need some help with the process.

For extras claims

Tap your Qantas Health Insurance card at any provider with a HICAPS machine and just pay the remaining bill, if there is any. If you can't claim at your service provider, you can claim online via the self-service portal or through the Qantas Wellbeing app.

Complaints info

Qantas Health Insurance is underwritten by nib which, unfortunately, has a sub-standard record with complaints. nib has 9.6% of market share but accounted for 10.1% of complaints received by the Commonwealth Ombudsman's Office in the last financial year. This means nib is receiving a higher-than-average number of complaints.
