Our verdict

Pros

  • Cover is aimed at older Australians and includes benefits for medication spoilage, mobility scooters, and medical aids.
  • Apia also offers specific home insurance cover for people in nursing homes, assisted living residences, and retirement villages.
  • Apia’s Home Assist option can connect you with emergency tradespeople, taking the stress off if an urgent issue arises at home.

Cons

  • If you’re under 50, you’ll have to look elsewhere for cover.
  • Guest contents is only covered up to $2,000 but many brands offer up to $5,000.
  • Temporary accommodation is only covered for up to 4 weeks, but some brands offer up to 12 months.

Apia has some benefits that aren’t offered by other home insurance providers, including medication spoilage and lower-cost, lower-limit policies for people living in nursing homes or retirement villages.

However, its standard home insurance offers falls behind many other brands when looking at the maximum amounts policy holders can claim in certain situations.
