Bankwest covers up to an additional 25% on top of your sum insured when it isn't enough to cover your loss. This is only available as an optional add-on with many other insurers we looked at.
Flood cover is automatically included in all policies – many other home insurers will charge extra for this.
You get up to 15% off a combined building and contents insurance policy but insurers including Budget Direct, St.George and Westpac offer larger sign up discounts.
What does Bankwest home insurance cover?
Bankwest is issued by Hollard Insurance. It comes with 3 different options for home owners: building insurance, contents insurance and a combined home and contents insurance policy. It also offers landlord insurance and options for renters. It has a cooling off period of 21 days – this is the standard among most insurers.
Some main events covered by Bankwest home insurance include:
These are some of the standard features that you can claim on if an insured event causes damage or loss.

Here's some information on Bankwest home insurance complaints
We looked at home insurance complaint data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) between July 2020 and June 2021. The data breaks down different underwriters and compares their business size to the number of complaints processed.
When comparing insurers, keep in mind that insurers with a larger market share serve more customers, so can potentially get more complaints.
Here's an overview of how Bankwest (Commonwealth Insurance Limited) did:
Despite its large size, Commonwealth didn't receive many complaints. It also has a lower percentage of complaints than other similarly-sized insurers, which suggests customers tend to be happy with their insurance policy.
While it didn't receive many complaints and most were resolved directly with its customers, a small number were escalated to the AFCA.
Frequently asked questions
To make a claim with Bankwest, you must contact them by phone at 13 1361
You also need to take all reasonable steps to prevent further damage or loss to your property. You should start the claim process as soon as possible after the damage or loss has occurred to ensure you receive the maximum benefit from your insurance.
When making a claim, you will need your policy number and contact details.
If the claim is about theft or a malicious act, you must report it to the police and get a reference number from them to submit with your claim.
If you are claiming for contents, you will need to prove ownership. To do so, you can use any of the following:
Receipts
Photographs
Warranty certificates
User manuals and original packaging
Serial numbers
Bankwest may need to inspect your property or discuss the event with you before they can settle the claim.
If you choose the optional portable contents cover, your possessions will be insured anywhere in Australia and for the first 30 days overseas. When taking out the policy, you can select how much you want the maximum claim benefit to be. However, the maximum amount you may claim for any one item is $1000.
To be eligible for a Bankwest home or contents insurance policy, you must be:
Be aged 15 years and above (unless by exception), or a company
Own a domestic home in Australia
Meet underwriting guidelines and all policy acceptance criteria.
Certain factors increase the risk and may mean you can't get cover, including:
The type of property (e.g. if it's under construction)
The total replacement value of the building
The condition of the home (e.g. poor condition)
The use of the property (for example if it's used for business, commercial or farming activity)

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
