When did the Google Pixel 9 series come out?

Google unveiled the Pixel 9 series on 14 August 2024 with pre-orders for most models kicking off the same day.

The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL have gone on sale officially as of 22 August.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is still available to pre-order and will go on sale from 4 September.

Lastly, the Pixel 9 Pro isn't available to pre-order. It'll go on sale directly from 4 September.

Optus Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro plans and deals

Optus is keeping it simple with a $600 discount on the Pixel 9 and $800 on the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

You will need to sign up to a 24 or 36-month handset repayment plan by 3 September 2024 to take advantage of any of the offers.

Signing up to an Optus plan will also give you access to:

  • Bonus 3 months of Amazon Prime worth $29.97
  • Optus Sport at a discounted price. You'll pay $9.99 per month instead of the usual $24.99
  • Endless data. Your speeds will be capped at 1.5Mbps once you've chewed through your data allowance
  • Data sharing across eligible linked accounts
  • Unlimited international calls and texts to 35 selected destinations (on its Medium plan and above)
  • Up to 10% in savings when you bundle 3 or more subscriptions via Optus SubHub or up to $20 every month on streaming when you sign up to the Large Choice

Vodafone Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro plans and deals

Vodafone's knocking off $200 of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and offering a trade-in bonus of $700 if you sign up by 3 September.

It's also offering a price-beat guarantee on all available Pixel 9 devices, matching Optus and Telstra's prices and adding an extra $10 for good measure.

The only caveat is it's a bit of a waiting game.

Here's how the price-beat guarantee works: order a new phone from Vodafone and submit a claim within 5 days of your purchase.

You'll need to provide contact details and proof of the competitor's lower advertised price within the claim form.

On a Vodafone plan, you'll also get:

  • No excess charges. Your speeds will be capped at 2Mbps once you've used up your data allowance
  • 3 months of BINGE for both new and returning customers
  • Unlimited international texts on all plans
  • Unlimited international minutes to Zone 1 countries and 300 minutes to Zone 2 countries on the medium and large SIM-only plans
  • $5 a day roaming to use your regular SIM-only plan overseas

Telstra Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro plans and deals

Telstra's discounting the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL by $750 if you buy either of the phones on a plan by 9 September.

Or, you can get an $800 discount by pre-ordering the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

With a Telstra mobile plan, you'll get:

  • Access to the largest 4G and 5G networks in Australia
  • No excess data charges. Your speeds will be capped at 1.5Mbps once you've used up your data allowance
  • 4-month access to Spotify Premium for new subscribers and 2-month subscription to BINGE for new customers
  • Unlimited international texts to all countries and at least 30 minutes of free calls

Is the Pixel 9 worth buying?

We've got a fair bit of phone testing ahead before we can give a definitive answer. And at the end of the day, it really depends on your budget and whether you want to take advantage of any of the offers.

But from our first impressions, it seems like it'll be a hit with folks who love top-notch cameras and appreciate the revamped iconic sculpted camera bar, and a range of AI-powered features.

Perhaps you really want a foldable that's not super bulky? Google's definitely trying to deliver on this by keeping it as thin as possible and bringing the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to Australia.

We've unpacked everything we know about the Pixel 9 range in our guide so grab a cuppa and deep dive to see if any of the models are worth buying before you sign up to a plan
