Southern Phone plans are actually pretty good value, especially with the discounts they are offering for the first 6-months of service. As a provider they meet a lot of different segments needs. It also offers carbon neutral plans for those more environmentally conscious and have dedicate senior hub on their site to help older Australians with their mobile needs.
Other reasons you might like Southern Phone are that:
You can worry less about your phone's impact on the environment since all of Southern Phone's plans are 100% carbon neutral.
Support section for seniors through dedicated products and plans.
But you might be concerned that:
There are no international roaming options, meaning you can't take your plan overseas.
You'll only get access to talk, text and data – some plans do have international call credit but otherwise there are no bonus features on Southern Phone's plans.
Our expert says
"I took out a SIM card from Southern Phone because of the $9/month for 20GB deal. I also like that you get $50 towards int'l phone calls as that means I get roughly 150 minutes to call the US if I can't connect via WhatsApp or FaceTime."
Southern Phone's mobile plans are fairly decent for the price they cost.
Most of Southern Phone's mobile plans have an average data cost lower than $0.90 per GB, which is great compared to a benchmark of $1 per GB.
Coverage
Southern Phone uses the Optus 4G and 5G mobile network, making it a solid choice for most Australians.
The Optus 4G and 5G mobile network reaches 98.5% of the population.
You'll get identical coverage to that offered by a plan purchased directly from Optus.
Keep in mind: You shouldn't run into any problems in metro areas, but could notice a drop in reception in rural or regional areas compared to plans on the Telstra network.
Does Southern Phone have 5G?
Yes, Southern Phone offers 5G connectivity via the Optus 5G network. You will have 3 plans to choose from:
Small $24 a month and includes 20GB of data
Medium $29 a month and includes 40GB of data
Large $34 a month and includes 80GB of data

What constitutes “data” in regard to mobile phones?
JonathanJune 8, 2017
Hi Dennis!
Thanks for the comment.
Data is the exchange of information from the internet and your device or its applications. Whenever you turn-on your “data”, you are connected to the network and download or upload information. This includes emails, chat, browsing, internet banking, using voice over internet apps and many more.
You may contact your network by calling their hotline for further details on how you can manage your data.
Hope this clarifies.
Cheers,
Jonathan

I’m trying to finalise my plan but my mobile cut out. I have rang three times in an attempt to complete my application (which is on your computer file), but to no avail. Don’t email me.

Hi norm p.
You’ve reached finder, not Southern Phone telco. I would recommend contacting Southern Cross on 1300 019 408.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
