September’s best frequent flyer credit cards: points and perks for miles
Finder's 5 top Qantas and Velocity Points earning cards on the market this month.
Every month Finder crunches the numbers and updates our Finder Scores for all our frequent flyer credit cards.
For September we've found the market's 5 best frequent flyer cards based on a combination of:
- A high bonus points offer on sign up.
- A high earn rate so you can get points when you spend.
- The annual fee (lower is better but the best cards will charge around $300 or more).
- The purchase rate, foreign exchange fees and other factors.
1. ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Card
The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black has a Finder Score of 9.9 in the frequent flyer category.
This card offers a ridiculous amount of bonus Qantas Points: 90,000 in the first 3 months if you spend $5,000, and another 40,000 if you keep the card for 12 months. The annual fee is higher than most cards, but it's partly offset by a $200 cashback.
This is one of those cards that you really have to hit all the conditions to get the bonus points and cashback. Do that and you're getting great value for money.
2. Qantas Premier Titanium
The Qantas Premier Titanium has a frequent flyer Finder Score of 9.76.
If you can stomach the $1,200 annual fee, this card will earn you a massive 150,000 bonus Qantas Points. Plus you get 20% bonus status credits and an earn rate of 1.25 Qantas Points per dollar spent.
You also need to earn at least $200,000 a year. This is a true high flyer card. It won't be for everyone, because of the high entry costs. But if you want a credit card that gives you serious frequent flyer cred, this might be it.
3. Qantas American Express Ultimate Card
The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card has a Finder Score of 9.43 in the frequent flyer category.
This card offers 50,000 bonus Qantas Points if you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months and a higher than average earn rate of 1.25 points for dollar spent. The annual fee is a hefty $450 but a $450 yearly travel credit cancels that out nicely.
While not the biggest bonus points offer, if you use the travel credit each year and spend a lot on the card, it's going to be a cost-effective points earning machine.
4. Westpac Altitude Qantas Black
The Westpac Altitude Qantas Black has a Finder Score of 9.55 in the frequent flyer category.
This is a really strong Qantas bonus points offer. 120,000 points if you spend $6,000 in the first 120 days. But you do have to wait 12 months for a quarter of those points to come through.
The earn rate is below 1 point per dollar and the annual fee is $370. High, but lower than a lot of top scoring cards on the market.
5. Westpac Altitude Velocity Black
The Westpac Altitude Velocity Black has a Finder Score of 9.55 in the frequent flyer category.
This card offers the exact same basic points deal as the Qantas Black but for the Velocity Points program.
If you're looking for a similar Velocity Points card with a lower fee and lower bonus offer but a higher earn rate, the Velocity High Flyer Card is a great option too.
