Dodo hikes mobile plan prices but adds 5G. Is it still worth it?

Dodo is overhauling its mobile plan offerings, with 5G connectivity being added for the first time.

Some plans are also set to receive a data boost of up to 15GB per month.

The good news is that you don't need to do anything to get the extra data and/or faster speeds - all current Dodo customers will be transitioned to the corresponding plan in the coming months.

The bad news is that most plans are receiving a monthly price hike too.

Here's a breakdown of the new plans based on ongoing costs, what's included and how much they will set you back:

Old price and data allowanceNew price and data allowanceNew features
$10 a month for 2GBn/an/a
$20 a month for 15GB$23 a month for 15GB
  • Up to 500GB data banking
$25 a month for 25GB$28 a month for 30GB
  • Unlimited data banking
$35 a month for 45GB$33 a month for 40GB
  • 5G network
  • Unlimited data banking
n/a$38 a month for 60GB
  • 5G network
  • Unlimited data banking
  • $400 international call credit

As you can see, the average monthly price increase is $3, which works out to $36 per year.

The biggest losers are customers on the $20 per month plan, who won't be receiving any additional data or access to 5G when they roll over to the new $23 plan.

Meanwhile, customers on the top-tier $38 plan are getting an extra 15GB of data per month (for a total of 60GB), plus 5G connectivity. Not too shabby.

Customers on the old $35 plan can also downgrade to a $33 5G plan which comes with a monthly data allowance of 40GB (down from 45GB).

$10 plan axed

It's worth noting that Dodo has decided to discontinue the entry-level $10 plan.

Existing customers will reportedly be moved to a 4GB $15 per month plan. However, this option won't be available to new customers and you can't downgrade from a more expensive plan either.

For all intents and purposes, the entry level plan is dead.

What else is included?

All plans come with "unlimited" data, with download speeds dropping to 256Kbps if you exceed your data allowance.

5G connectivity is limited to the $33 and $38 per month plans, with speeds limited to 100Mbps.

Plans starting at $23 per month include data rollover, unlimited data banking and international calling ($100 credit minimum).

If you're keen to make the switch straight away, you can contact Dodo to upgrade your existing plan. Otherwise, expect to be moved to the equivalent plan in the coming months.
