Dodo’s most popular NBN plan is more expensive now: here’s how to save
Another provider makes changes ahead of NBN's new pricing framework, which kicks in on 1 December 2023.
We've witnessed price changes to NBN plans from providers such as Optus, Telstra and Aussie Broadband since October 2023.
Dodo is following suit by bumping up the monthly cost of its NBN 50 plan by $5 from 1 December 2023. It's currently one of the most popular NBN plans from Dodo on Finder.
How much will Dodo's NBN 50 cost now?
Dodo's NBN 50 plan will cost $80 per month instead of $75.
But, you can lock in savings with an exclusive offer only available via Finder.
The NBN 50 plan will cost $70 a month for the first 6 months.
Customers who sign up for the offer won't have to pay the new price of $80 a month until after their first 6 months. And instead of paying $960 for the year, you'll pay $900.
In comparison, Dodo's NBN 100 plan, which offers almost double the typical download speed, costs $85 a month.
If you need faster speeds, you can always switch to NBN 100 after the 6-month offer is up.
Why are NBN prices changing?
The trend in motion from providers is that low to mid-level NBN speed tiers are becoming less favourable, and faster speeds (NBN 100 and above) are becoming cheaper.
It's all a result of NBN's new pricing framework, which sets in on 1 December 2023.
We expect other providers will continue shaking up their prices over the next few months if they haven't already.
The main impact has been that NBN 50 plans are becoming more expensive by around $5 to $10 a month.
It's also currently the most popular speed tier in Australia and is used by 44% of people, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
However, NBN 100 is gaining momentum, and some providers have lowered their prices to give it even more traction.
Interestingly, Dodo isn't one of the said providers.
NBN is also promoting faster internet backed by research that the average Australian home has more than 21 connected devices and needs faster speeds.
In conjunction with this, NBN is also running a fibre upgrade program to give households a faster and more reliable internet connection. Eligible premises can only trigger the upgrade if they sign up for an NBN 100 plan or above.

Price wars: NBN 50 vs NBN 100
The crux of the changes is the price gap between the most popular speed tiers - NBN 50 and NBN 100 - is getting smaller.
Here's a look at the price difference for the 2 plans from some providers that have changed their pricing (excluding promos).

As you can see, there isn't a massive difference in monthly cost between NBN 50 and NBN 100.
You could get more value for money by signing up for NBN 100 if you need faster speeds. You get double the speed as NBN 50 for an extra $5 to $14 a month depending on the provider.
But if you don't need more speed, you should stick to NBN 50 as it's still worth saving that $5 to $14 a month - that's up to $168 in savings over a year.
In fact, the ACCC has said retailers shouldn't encourage people to switch to a faster plan if they don't need it.
The watchdog is also asking households to shop around for their NBN plan as the price difference between retailers can be 'significant'.
