The airport Barbecue Shapes rort
$6.49 for a single packet. Truly.
I know, I go on a lot about how buying Tim Tams at the airport is an absolute waste of money.
But the airport biscuit stupidity continues despite my protests.
The latest example is another Australian icon, Arnott's Shapes.
Shapes are seemingly never far from controversy, having endured a controversial flavour change a few years ago which ended with Arnott's switching back and hoping nobody noticed.
Now Shapes are lining up for the Overpriced At The Airport Hall Of Fame.
This week, in my regular Tight Traveller column for Escape, I discuss my abject horror at discovering a packet of Shapes on sale at an Australian airport for $6.49.
That's more than double the $3.20 you'd regularly pay at the supermarket, and more than three times what you'd pay when they go on special. Indeed, specials for Shapes happen so often I would hope that savvy shoppers never actually pay full price.
I suffer no delusions. I know airport rents and the convenience factor mean that prices for these kinds of items are always going to be over the top.
But just because something is selling for $6.49 doesn't mean you have to buy it.
