SHOCK: Airport Tim Tams are actually cheaper

An infamous airport retail rort has finally ended.

I've complained for years about how Tim Tams at Australia's international airports are a terrible buy.

Often airport outlets would charge more than twice the standard supermarket price.

$6.50 for 200 grams of droolworthy chocolate biscuit goodness? Tell 'em they're dreaming.

And I was fully expecting to see more of the same when I took my first international flight in over 2 years last week.

But apparently extended pandemic closures have been enough to bring airport retailers to their senses.

At the main duty-free store in Sydney International, the price for regular Tim Tams was just $4.00 a packet.

Amazingly, that's actually the same standard price you'll pay at Woolworths or Coles.

A selection of $4 Tim Tim packets

I really did not expect that.

I haven't done an exhaustive check of every airport outlet. It would not surprise me if some stores in domestic airports are still charging more. Again, it's happened before.

And to be clear, Tim Tams are routinely on sale in major supermarkets for lower prices than this.

Indeed, as I write this, Woolworths is selling them for $2 a packet, while Coles has a 2 for $6 offer running.

So I still can't recommend buying Tim Tams at an airport. If you're heading overseas and want to take some iconic Aussie biscuit gifts, stock up before your trip.

But in an era where inflation is driving up the price of everything, I'll take any (chocolate) crumb of comfort.
