The first major phone launch of 2024 is just around the corner.

Update (18 Jan): You can now pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S24, S24 Ultra and S24 Plus on a plan from major telcos in Australia, with bonus gifts valued over $900.

Samsung is set to dominate headlines this week as it unveils the Galaxy S24 series in an earlier-than-expected launch.

We're anticipating the usual suspects which are the S24 base model, the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra.

It's no state secret that the launch is also meant to give AI enthusiasts heaps to talk about.

Samsung Galaxy S24 release date

For those in Australia, the Samsung Galaxy S24 will be revealed on January 18 2024 at 5am AEDT.

The Galaxy Unpacked event is being held in San Jose USA and will be live-streamed on Samsung's website plus its YouTube channel.

Fortunately, it's a decent hour in case you do decide to set your alarm a wee bit earlier to catch the official unveiling of 2024's first big phone launch.

Samsung Galaxy S24 rumoured prices and specs

According to Tom's Guide, Samsung is likely to keep its prices the same as last year. The thinking is Samsung will use both Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Exynos 2400 chips to combat an increase in phone costs.

However, a separate European rumour by GalaxyHub (Netherlands) suggests the S24 Ultra may be a bit more expensive. We don't know if that's going to be reflected in the Australian market.

Here's a look at prices for the S23 series for ballpark figures on how much you can expect to pay for this year's models.

PhoneRRP
Samsung Galaxy S23 128GB$1,349
Samsung Galaxy S23 256GB$1,449
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus 256GB$1,649
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus 512GB$1,849
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 256GB$1,949
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 512GB$2,249
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 1TB$2,649

Now on to the specs and features. The S23 series was a crowd favourite, especially the S23 Ultra which I personally think boasts one of the best smartphone cameras around. Even better than the iPhone 15 Pros.

But from what Samsung's teasing, we're set to see it go all-in with AI, meaning its software upgrades will likely be front and centre at the unveiling. We're also expecting hardware improvements that are more of a refinement of the S23 series.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as whatever way Samsung packages its new phones makes an upgrade worth the splurge.

Other things we're hearing:

  • Overall design of the 3 models looks to remain mostly unchanged, but we can potentially expect thinner bezels (part of the frame on a smartphone)
  • The phone sizes will also likely remain the same at 6.1, 6.6 and 6.8 inches
  • The S24 Ultra could boast a titanium finish similar to the iPhone 15 Pro models
  • Modest improvement on last year's cameras
