Grab your coffee or cup of tea, and let's unpack everything Samsung announced for the Galaxy S25 series. Spoiler alert: There's no fourth phone just yet but we can expect it to come later this year.

It's official. We've had our first major phone launch of 2025 and all the piping-hot rumours can be put to the side for the real deal.

Here's a quick brief before we get into the nitty-gritty.

Key takeaways

  • Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra at its 2025 Unpacked event in San Jose.
  • As part of the unveiling, Samsung teased the Galaxy S25 Edge, the fourth phone in the series predicted to be a much slimmer version of the Galaxy S25. The details are scarce but we know it'll launch sometime this year.
  • Pre-orders have kicked off as of today, 6am AEDT. You can check them out here. The phones will be available from 14 February 2025.
  • The S25 and S25 Plus are priced the same as their S24 counterparts, but the S25 Ultra had a $50 price cut.
  • No surprises here but Samsung's once again driving home on AI. It wants your phone to be an almost human-like AI agent, with a ton of personalisation.
  • Admittedly, there are a couple of AI features I'm not mad about and could perhaps use regularly.
  • The S25 series will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip to power all the new AI tricks and boost performance. There's also a handy audio eraser feature to make you go woah.
  • My favourite piece of news from the entire launch has to be that the S25 Ultra is finally getting rounded edges. The squared corners always felt awkward on such a large phone.
  • All the models will be the slimmest and lightest to date.
  • The S25 Ultra will have a new 50-megapixel ultrawide camera for more detailed, vibrant and sharp photos.
  • It will also feature Corning Gorilla Armor 2, the industry's first scratch-resistant, anti-reflective glass ceramic cover material for mobile devices.
  • Lastly, you can get a funky Crocs case for your new S25. It's pretty fun.

How much does the S25 series cost?

It would have been nice to see a reduction across the board but alas, we'll have to settle for a $50 price cut on the S25 Ultra.

Everything else sticks to the same pricing as last year.

Design and performance

Samsung finally listened to like-minded people like myself and flattened the edges of the S25 Ultra (yay!).

It also made the entire S25 series the slimmest and lightest yet. The bezels are also thinner, giving you more screen and less frame.

I'm not too keen on the camera rings at the back though. They're darker now and feel more like an A-series design - not quite the premium look you'd expect for the price.

That's sort of it on the design front. The S25 and S25 Plus still have aluminium builds. The S25 Ultra features titanium and Corning Gorilla Armor 2 for even better durability.

The other major update is that the series is powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite - Samsung's most customised chip yet.

It'll boost overall performance and, for the S25 Ultra, take gaming to the next level with lifelike visuals and a larger vapour chamber for better cooling.

You can even make your S25 look "cool" with a Crocs case, and add on as many Jibbitz charms as you like.

Cameras and editing tools

Only the S25 Ultra gets an upgrade to its ultrawide sensor, jumping from 12MP to 50MP for sharper, more vibrant ultrawide and macro shots.

Galaxy's Pro Visual engine gets a boost as well. For example:

  • You'll get much clearer low-light videos.
  • Audio Eraser makes it easy to remove unwanted noise from videos. I've seen it in action and was wildly impressed, but I'm keen to do more testing when I get one of the devices for review.
  • Portrait Studio has gotten a makeover so you can create personalised avatars with more true-to-life facial expressions.
  • 'Filters' will give your photos and videos a more film-like aesthetic.

The new and improved Galaxy AI tricks

AI took centre stage in most major phone launches of 2024. A year on, Samsung is back to beating the AI drum.

Samsung's worked with Google to integrate AI more deeply into the device so it can better anticipate and respond to your needs, all with a single press of a single button.

Other new and updated features include:

Now Brief: It's a new addition that gives you a daily summary based on your routine. It covers things like your sleep report, the weather forecast, your schedule for the day, and travel info for meetings. Plus, at the end of the day, it will even send you a summary of things like the photos you've taken and your step count. This seems like something I'd use and interact with regularly as you can customise what you want to see.

Now Bar: This is integrated with Now Brief. You can get quick access to your favourite apps, media controls, and key information directly on the lock screen.

Gallery & Settings: The feature allows you to control your phone with just your voice. You can ask it to show you photos from your trip to Italy for instance, or even change the font size without touching a button.

Circle to Search gets better: It will not include the ability to record and identify music.

AI Select: It will help your phone device anticipate your needs. For example, if you're watching a golf video on YouTube and you make a swiping gesture, the AI might suggest saving a part of the video as a GIF or clip.

Samsung says it's kept privacy and security top of mind, with all data secured by Knox Vault.

You can expect the standard seven years of security and software updates.

First thoughts

I've only had a brief hands-on with the S25 series, so it's hard to give a definitive verdict. But they are Samsung's fastest and smartest phones to date.

That said, I'd be cautious about getting too hyped unless you're upgrading from a much older handset.

At this point, I'm left wanting more. The talking points dry out fast if you put AI to the side.

But I'll give it to Samsung - it's making AI genuinely useful in smartphones and setting a high bar for the competition. With Apple's underwhelming debut of Apple Intelligence, Samsung's AI tools stand out even more.
