How I saved $850 in 20 minutes and why you can too!

Don't be like me. Don't let your insurance policies auto-renew.
As Finder's insurance publisher, I tell people how to save on their insurance bills everyday.
And when I had $5,000 worth of my own renewals, increases, bills and premiums to pay… well, I took that personally.
So I cracked my knuckles, opened Finder and used every strategy I've ever written about to save myself some cash.
Specifically, $850 worth of cash.
I started with the most offensive bill
Motorbike insurance: why does the loud, metal vroom vroom cost $1,300 to insure? Because I committed the number one insurance crime: autorenewal.
My policy automatically renewed, meaning I was missing out on savings by comparing elsewhere. I know, I know - I can't look myself in the eye either.
So I opened Finder, found that Youi offered a really comprehensive policy and started my quote. Youi called me to finalise the quote, and I saved $550.

Once I'd locked in my new policy with Youi, I called the other company and cancelled the existing motorcycle insurance.
They then mailed me a cheque for over $1,200 for the refund. It's a high I'm still chasing.
Speaking of high – my home insurance is sky-high
Every year, home insurance is a $2,000-ish pain in my side. So I called Youi again and walked out with a fresh home insurance policy and nearly $200 back in my pocket.
For those playing along, we're now at about $680 in savings between the motorcycle and home insurance.
So, what's left? Car insurance.
Why do I know there's room to save money? Because I accidentally let that autorenew too. I know, someone hide this article from my boss.
This one was less offensive. It was only due to go up by around $60 from the year prior, but I was on a saving spree and ready for another hit.
This time I walked out with a renewed policy and over $170 saved.
And there we have it, a total of $850 saved.
All without any reduction in actual coverage either. Brilliant.
So if your own insurances are up for renewal soon or if you're just feeling salty with your current provider, shop around and see what can be done. There's almost always a bit of wiggle room.
Plus, spending less on bills feels phenomenal.
