Aussies are expected to spend an eye watering amount across the upcoming sales season, according to new research by Finder.

A Finder survey of 1,009 respondents revealed a staggering 1 in 2 (50%) Australians – equivalent to 10.5 million people – have shopped or plan to shop during some of the biggest sales events of the year.

Black Friday and Boxing Day are in a dead heat, with 1 in 3 (29%) Aussies planning to take part in both events.

This is followed by Amazon Prime Day (14%), Afterpay Day (10%), and Cyber Monday (13%).

Shoppers have already spent $607 each on average across the sales – equivalent to $6.3 billion nationally.

But they're only just getting started and are expected to spend a further $722 each on average on upcoming sales before the end of the year – that's $7.5 billion nationally.

Chris Jager, shopping expert Finder, said Aussies are gearing up for the annual bargain bonanza.

"With rising costs and economic uncertainty, finding ways to save is more important than ever.

"The upcoming sales events offer a fantastic opportunity to save on holiday gifts and essentials."

Of those planning to shop at the big sales events this year, clothes and shoes (62%) top the priority list, followed by electronics and gadgets (41%).

Shoppers also have their eyes set on beauty, skincare, and makeup (33%), as well as food and alcohol (29%), accessories (29%), and toys (26%).

Jager urged shoppers not to let the excitement of a good deal lead to overspending.

"Set yourself a limit and prioritise your shopping list to avoid impulse purchases.

"If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Discounts of 80%+ need to be taken with a grain of salt. Be sure to check the historical pricing of products on sale.

"If you prefer to shop in-store, consider shopping during off-peak hours to avoid crowds.

"By researching prices and comparing deals across different retailers, you can ensure you're getting the best value for your money."
