January’s top scoring frequent flyer credit cards
We've crunched the numbers: here are Finder's highest rated Velocity and Qantas credit cards.
Whether you're about to head off on a summer trip, or you've just come home and are dreaming of your next one, a new year is a good time to think about earning points.
The credit cards we've rounded up here offer large amounts of bonus Qantas or Velocity Points, and let you earn points on your spending too. Most of these points offers are for new customers, and require you to spend a fair bit in the first few months.
To make the most out of these fancy frequent flyer credit cards make sure you get the full use out of all the points and perks. And make sure the benefits outweigh the card's annual fee.
1. ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Card
The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black has a Finder Score of 9.52 in the frequent flyer category.
ANZ's Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card once again takes the top spot in January. This card ticks all the boxes for a points-chasing cardholder: 130,000 bonus Qantas Points (although you have to wait 12 months for the last 40,000) and an earn rate of 1 point per dollar (up to $7,500 per statement period).
The card has a hefty annual fee, but it's partially offset by a $200 credit (if you meet the spend criteria).
2. Qantas Premier Titanium
The Qantas Premier Titanium has a frequent flyer Finder Score of 9.37.
The Qantas Premier Titanium is one of Finder's consistently top scoring frequent flyer cards. But it comes with a big warning label: this is not your entry level points-earning card.
This thing hits you with a $1,200 annual fee. And you need to earn $200,000 a year to qualify for the card. If you can afford all that, you get 150,000 bonus Qantas Points, bonus status credits, flight discounts and more.
3. American Express Velocity Platinum Card
The American Express Velocity Platinum Card has a frequent flyer Finder Score of 9.2.
With this card you get a reasonable 60,000 bonus points, which is fewer than some of the top offers. But you earn 1.25 Velocity Points per dollar spent (and even more if you spend through Virgin Australia). You can also get up to 100 Bonus Status Credits and a yearly complimentary return domestic flight.
When you put all this together you get a really rewarding all-round credit card.
4. Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card
The Virgin Australia Velocity High Flyer Card has a Finder Score of 9.17.
It's one of Finder's top scoring Velocity Points-earning cards this month. If offers 80,000 bonus points if you spend $3,500 per month, for the first 2 months and an earn rate of 1 Velocity Point per dollar (capped at a pretty high $8,000 a month).
The bonus points plus a $129 Virgin Australia gift card and lounge passes certainly lessen the sting of the $329 annual fee.
5. Westpac Altitude Qantas Black
The Westpac Altitude Qantas Black has a Finder Score of 9.16.
This card scores highly with a generous 120,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6,000 in the first 120 days. You do need to keep the card for a whole year to get the full amount though.
The card earns 0.75 Qantas Points per dollar spent, which is a little lower than most comparable cards.
6. Westpac Altitude Velocity Black
The Westpac Altitude Velocity Black has a Finder Score of 9.16 in the frequent flyer category.
This card has all the details as the Westpac Altitude Qantas Black card, but for Velocity Points.
