Women more likely to be stressed about money and safety
New Finder research confirms that 70% of women feel uncomfortable and almost half feel unsafe in everyday situations.
Walking in your neighbourhood after dark.
At an Australian school or university campus.
By yourself at the gym.
In a rideshare, like an Uber, Didi or taxi.
Catching public transport – the train, the bus, the tram or a ferry.
While visiting the grocery store or other essential services.
In other public spaces.
In your own place of residence.
In every single one of these situations, women admit to feeling less safe than men.
They're overwhelmingly more likely to feel uncomfortable, too – 70% for women vs 53% for men.
Earlier this year, Finder partnered with UN Women Australia to produce our International Women's Day Report for 2024, which found:
- women are 40% more likely than men to be facing cost-of-living induced financial stress.
- women's savings buffer dropped from 15 to 13 weeks in the last 2 years.
- 59% of women say they are enjoying life less compared to 12 months ago due to financial pressure, compared to only 48% of men.
Now, we've done further research into the state of play for women in Australia right now.
And we discovered that women continue to feel unsafe in a wide range of situations.
"In Australia, women face a 1 in 3 chance of being assaulted, and 1 in 2 will experience sexual harassment. These are not just statistics – it's a national disgrace," says Simone Clarke, Chief Executive Officer of United Nations Women.
"Safe. Everywhere. Always. is UN Women Australia's call to action to come together and commit to meaningful change as part of the UN's 16 Days of Activism to end Gender-Based Violence. We're calling on all Australians to join our campaign against gender-based violence, support programs working to end violence against women around the world and take a stand for a world where women and girls are Safe. Everywhere. Always."
Monday 25th November 2024 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and it also marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
When one woman is being violently killed every 4 days in Australia, it's time to take action. You can register for UN Women Australia's #SafeEveryoneAlways challenge here.
