ExtrasJar Pet Insurance

Pros

  • It offers annual benefit limit options of $10,000 $15,000, and $25,000 – impressive as the standard for most insurers on Finder is $15,000
  • Dental illness, behavioural issues and specialised therapies are all included
  • There's a $0 policy excess option. Not all pet insurance providers have this
  • No insurance paperwork – manage your account on your phone.

Cons

  • ExtrasJar is a recent entrant into pet insurance. Some might prefer a more established brand name such as RSPCA or Coles. That being said, ExtrasJar is backed by Knose, a double winner at the Finder Pet Insurance Awards 2023
  • You can't add routine care on to your plan. For typical services, such as vaccinations, you'll need to open a pet extras account with ExtrasJar.

Who is ExtrasJar?

ExtrasJar is a Brisbane-based financial services company launched in August 2022. According to its website, ExtrasJar offers "innovative health & pet extras investment solutions and extensive wallet-friendly pet insurance".

ExtrasJar was founded in 2022 by Reece Frazier and John Connor. Connor, an experienced insurance actuary, has previously spoken with Finder about how ExtrasJar is trying to disrupt the health insurance market.

The way ExtrasJar is set up is different to most insurers. Account management is largely done via ExtrasJar's app. This is part of the company's push to keep operating costs low and pass on more value to consumers.

Customers with a pet extras account have the option to keep money in a registered investment fund, which ExtrasJar manages. The funds can be accessesed at any time to pay for pet-related services – such as vaccinations and grooming – using an ExtrasJar Pet Mastercard. This is in addition to ExtrasJar's regular insurance policy offering.
