What is short selling?
Short selling, or "shorting", is an investment tool used by traders to cash in on a falling share price.
The goal of a short-seller is to "borrow" shares in a company, buy them (although they never actually own the shares) and sell them back later on.
The short-seller profits if the price of the shares fall.
However, if the price rises, then the short-seller will need to increase their position.
As we saw during the Gamestop Saga earlier this year, short-sellers are susceptible to a short-squeeze, where the share price rapidly increases primarily due to the excess of short-sellers in the market.
Long (Buy)
This is the more traditional way of investing in the stock market.
Investors who go "long" are buying shares in the hope that over time the share price will grow or improve.
They will make money if the share price increases and lose money should the share price fall.
How can I find out if a company I own is being shorted?
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) releases data on the short positions held against stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). To save you having to download and sort through the numbers each week, we've created the table below which will automatically update as the new reports are made available.
Wait... betting against companies isn't illegal?
Short-selling is not illegal in Australia. However, because it can be very risky, it should only be practised by experienced traders.
There are a couple of ways to short stocks in Australia. One of the most common methods of shorting a stock in Australia is through the derivatives market in options or CFD trading. You can read more about derivatives trading in our comprehensive guides or if you want to get trading, you can also compare CFD brokers and options trading brokers.
The traditional method of short selling requires a brokerage account that offers a margin account and enables short-selling. Some brokers include CommSec, Interactive Brokers and Amscot.

How we picked theseImportant: The standard brokerage fee displayed is the trade cost for new customers to purchase $1,000 of either Australian or US shares. Where a platform charges different fees for both US and Australian shares we show the lower of the two. Where both CHESS sponsored and custodian shares are offered, we display the cheapest option.
