How does Allianz Travel Insurance cover COVID-19?

Allianz’s policies have a general exclusion against epidemics and pandemics with a few exceptions for specific benefits. Here’s what you can expect to be covered for:

  • Pre-trip and on-trip cancellation costs if you or your travelling companion are diagnosed
  • Overseas medical and hospital expenses if you are diagnosed while on your trip
  • Additional expenses including accommodation and travel costs
  • Medical or hospital expenses while cruising including ship-to-shore evacuation cover (if Cruise Pack is purchased)

On top of Allianz’s COVID-19 coverage, you could be up for a partial refund of your insurance premium if you need to cancel or shorten your trip due to a COVID-19 mandatory quarantine period or border closure.

There are some scenarios that are not covered and you should review the Allianz Travel Insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) before deciding on whether this cover meets your needs.

Allianz travel insurance is underwritten by AWP Australia Pty Ltd.

It comes with a cooling-off period of 14 days which allows you to you cancel your policy if you change your mind and receive a full refund. You also have your choice of base excess that applies when claiming for an insured event. An excess is an amount you must first pay towards a claim, and you can lower the cost of your policy by selecting a higher excess.

"I recently purchased Allianz travel insurance for a trip I made with my daughter to the UK. I decided on Allianz after doing some online research comparing prices and what was covered in policies across various companies. I was able to play around with the excess to make the amount cheaper or more expensive based on my own requirements. Luckily, I didn't need to make a claim while I was away, but my experience with Allianz was a positive one and I felt they stacked up well against other insurance companies when I was comparing. "

Optional add-on

Along with Allianz’s four levels of cover, you’ve got further flexibility through its add-on packs. These packs let you tailor your policy with extra cover by paying an additional premium.

  • Adventure pack. If you’re planning something adventurous that’s not automatically covered, you can add cover for a selection of riskier sports and activities such as abseiling, outdoor rock climbing and hiking.
  • Cruise pack. Extend your cover to also include any claims related to cruise travel, including evacuation cover, cabin confinement and pre-paid shore excursion cancellation.
  • Increase item limits cover. Travelling with high-value items? Get a higher limit on your cover for the loss, theft or accidental damage to, luggage and personal effects than the one your chosen plan offers.
  • Snow pack. Cover for snow sport activities - including emergency rescue, hire as well as your own snow sport equipment, piste closure, bad weather closure and more.

Exclusions

All travel insurance providers have some exclusions built into their policies and they’re usually pretty similar. This is the one part of your policy documents that you’ll want to pay close attention to, however, as it’s why a fair chunk of travellers wanting to claim, get rejected. Here are a few key things Allianz won't cover you for:

  • Travelling when you know you are unfit or against medical advice
  • A pre-existing medical condition not approved by Allianz
  • Self-harm, suicide, or attempted suicide
  • Diving alone
  • Ignoring safety warnings
  • You being affected by any intoxicating drug or liquor to the extent that your physical, or mental functions, or your judgement are impaired
  • Participating in professional sport of any kind
  • Pregnancy after the start of the 24th week
  • Driving or riding a vehicle as the driver unless you hold the appropriate
    class of licence
  • Elective surgery or treatment
  • Make sure you review Allianz’s PDS for a full rundown of what isn't covered, found under its list of general exclusions.

Here's the bottom line about Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz is considered a global leader in insurance and its policies cover you for a range of unexpected events that may affect your trip. $20,000,000 overseas medical and hospital expenses and up to $5,000,000 for personal liability cover put Allianz at the top of the pack when it comes to peace of mind on your trip. Plus, its flexible cancellation cover lets you choose how much you’ll actually need without forcing you to pay for unnecessary cover.

The insurer isn’t for everyone, though. Allianz considers pregnancy a pre-existing condition which means you’ll need to complete a medical assessment. If you’re looking for comprehensive COVID-19 cover, Allianz gets close but there are still a handful of exclusions that might make you think twice.
