Our verdict: With competitive benefit limits, and 24/7 emergency support, Kogan travel insurance can offer plenty of peace of mind ahead of your next getaway.
Kogan has 3 core policies and lots of options to add more if needed: from cruise cover to adventure sports and more. Its policies are market competitive and flexible – this is underscored by the fact you can choose your own trip cancellation cover limit. It's reassuring to know you can call on Kogan's 24-hour emergency medical and security support in case of any mishaps on your travels.
Pros
Kogan offers COVID coverage of up to $5,000, which should be enough for most travellers. We also liked its missed connections cover of up to $3,000, and its high personal liability cover of $5 million
A rental car insurance excess limit of $10,000 – for domestic and international – beats most of the market.
Being able to set your trip cancellation benefit limit and your policy excess adds flexibility to your cover.
Cons
Kogan offers $12,000 in cover against the theft or damage to your luggage. This is competitive but Southern Cross Travel Insurance offers more.
By choosing Kogan's Essentials policy, you won't be covered for pre-trip cancellations if you get COVID and can't travel
In total, Kogan offers 3 policies. These are: International Plus, International Essentials and Domestic. You can opt for single or multi-trip insurance depending on your needs.
The cooling-off period of your policy is 21 days (better than the 14-days offered by some insurers). You can cancel or change your policy during this time for a full refund.
Your policy excess is the contribution you need to make towards a claim. By choosing a higher excess, you can save on the upfront cost of our cover.
Here's a breakdown of Kogan travel insurance features
With Kogan, there are a bunch of extras you can choose for added peace of mind. You'll need to pay to get any optional covers included in your policy.
Adventure activities, sports and motorcycles. Kogan offers cover for a range of pursuits: from jet skiing to abseiling to snow sports such as skiing or snowboarding. You can also add cover if you plan to ride a motorcycle or a moped on your travels. Always keep an eye on policy exclusions for these – one example being the need to wear a helmet.
Increased luggage cover for expensive items If the value of any items you're taking exceeds the single item limit of your policy – such as a pricey set of golf clubs or a camera – you can pay a fee to increase your cover limit for that item.
Cruise cover Get added cover if you're travelling for 2 or more nights on a cruise. Kogan offers unlimited cover for on-board medical and dental treatment and sea sickness. Other benefits include a useful $1,000 in protection if you miss any pre-booked tours if your cruise gets delayed.
Pregenancy According to Kogan, you can add pregnancy cover for "serious, unexpected pregnancy complications" up until the 24th week of your pregnancy. A number of restrictions apply so check the PDS for more detail on this.
Exclusions
As with any travel insurance, some situations won't be claimable. These are called exclusions. Here's a selection you generally won't be covered for:
Any pre-existing medical condition that hasn't been agreed to be listed in your insurance
Pregnancy after your 24th week; childbirth
Any event where you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Travelling against medical advice
Travelling against government advice
Carelessness – such as if you leave your luggage unattended
Always read the product disclosure statement (PDS) so that you're aware of any restrictions or exclusions that apply. Speak to the insurer directly if you want added peace of mind.
How to make a Kogan travel insurance claim
If you need to make a claim, you can do so online or over the phone. Kogan also makes it easy to track claims. The process is managed online through Kogan's Online Claims Centre.

One of the features of many high-end or rewards credit cards is complimentary travel insurance. Unlike standalone travel insurance policies which require you to pay a premium, these policies are offered for free to cardholders. However, keep in mind that you still need to pay your card’s annual fee and will need to use your credit card to book certain holiday costs in order to activate cover.
Similar to standalone travel insurance policies, complimentary credit card travel insurance offers cover for a host of risks you face while travelling, including overseas emergency medical expenses, cancellation fees and lost deposits, luggage and personal belongings, and legal liability.
However, just as with any other type of insurance, these policies feature a range of limits and exclusions that you should be wary of before setting off on a trip. It also pays to compare credit card travel insurance policies closely before deciding which card offers the right cover for you.

Hi Yvonne,
Thank you for getting in touch with finder.
Kogan Travel Insurance includes cover for overseas hospital, medical, surgical, nursing, ambulance and emergency dental expenses. A non-Australian citizen like a US citizen can be covered by Kogan Insurance if he has a home in Australia and holds a current Australian 457 Visa which will remain valid beyond the period of the trip. Also, the traveller must be not older than 74 years old at the time of purchasing the policy. Lastly, the trip commences and ends in Australia, therefore the traveller must have a return ticket to Australia.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Cheers,
Jeni

Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
