Our verdict: RAA Travel has particularly high benefit limits, including $10m legal liability and $8,000 rental car excess cover. It also offers cover for motorbikes and scooters as standard.
RAA Travel Insurance offers cover for mopeds, scooters and motorbikes as standard, as long as you can meet the requirements, including having a valid Australian licence.
RAA's Premium policy has a rental car excess of $8,000 - higher than some other providers we compared..
Cons
Other than snow sports, RAA doesn't offer an adventure or activity pack, so some higher-risk sports aren't covered including outdoor rock-climbing and skydiving.
RAA has fairly high benefit limits but doesn't give travellers the option to increase them, so if you're travelling with very expensive items, you might want to look elsewhere.
RAA Travel Insurance is not currently available via Finder. You can head to the RAA website or compare alternative options available below.
RAA's Premium International policy has you covered for a range of expenses related to COVID-19, including but not limited to:
Overseas emergency medical costs if you need treatment for COVID-19 while on your trip
Cash for general expenses while in hospital due to COVID-19
Repatriation to Australia or another country if deemed medically necessary
Return travel for supervised children if you can no longer look after them
Overseas funeral costs if you die due to COVID-19
Costs incurred from having to cancel, delay or change your trip because you're diagnosed with COVID-19, a relative or business partner dies or is hospitalised due to COVID-19, or if you're a healthcare worker and your leave is cancelled due to COVID-19.
There are some scenarios that are not covered by RAA including situations where you were diagnosed with COVID-19 before heading on your trip and if you're unable to provide a doctor's diagnosis for COVID-19.

How to make an RAA Travel Insurance claim
The quickest way to make a claim from RAA Travel Insurance is by using its online claim lodgement which is available 24/7.

Here's the bottom line about RAA Travel Insurance
RAA Travel Insurance comes with a good suite of benefits as standard, including cover for expenses related to COVID-19, moped and motorbike cover, and high benefit limits.
However, customers can't set their own specific item limits so be sure to check if you're travelling with expensive goods. While there's an option to add Snow Sports Cover, travellers don't have an adventure pack option so some extreme sports might not be covered.
Your children and your grandchildren are covered for free if they are 25 years old or younger, are financially dependent on their parents, are not working full time, do not require a medical assessment, are travelling with you the whole time; and are listed on the certificate of insurance.
If they meet the criteria above and you choose the Winter Sports add-on, they'll be covered for that as well. .
You have 21 days from the date of issue of the policy to cancel. As long as you haven't started your trip and don't want to claim against your policy, you cancel and claim a refund..
You are covered for an unlimited number of trips over a 12 month period, provided that each trip is at least 250km from your home.

When having the optional cover for rental car excess in my comprehensive car insurance, how do I make a claim in the event of having an accident whilst driving a rental car?
I can’t seem to find the appropriate form that recognises this event.
Please send me the details of what I would need to do if this unfortunate event occurred.
Thank you.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
